Speaking: Learning English

Guidelines:

  1. What is the importance of the English language in our lives? Please provide reasons that motivate Thai students tolearn English.

Sample response:

Only knowing a native language is not enough for today’s world. English is important as it is the official language of AEC. Being competent in English provides better opportunities, for example, higher education, higher salaries, and better lifestyles.

  1. What is the best way to learn English? Please explain how you have practiced or will practice to be better at English

Sample response:

For me, the best way to learn English is to practice it in real situations. I think English is a skill and we need to practice it as often as we can. I usually watch movie without Thai subtitles and find opportunities to communicate with foreigners.

  1. Which is more important when learning English, grammar or vocabulary? Please provide details to support your answer.

Sample response:

In my opinion, vocabulary is more important than grammar. If you do not know words, you cannot communicate at all. People get the meaning across with vocabulary, not grammar. When we listen to or read something, we need to look for keywordsrather than grammar. Therefore, grammar is less important.

Follow-up

  1. Which of the following is the most difficult English skill to acquire: listening, speaking, reading or writing? Why do you feel this way?

Sample response:

I think the most important English skill is writing because it requires more sub-skills, for example, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and so on. Moreover, writing requires both accuracy and the level of formality.

  1. Learning English with a native English speaking teacher is better than learning with a Thai teacher. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why or why not? Please support your opinion with some examples or details.

Sample response:

I don’t agree with the statement because I am at the elementary level of English proficiency and it might be better to learn English with a teacher who shares my native language. When I have any problems, I can use Thai to ask my teacher and he can explain to me in Thai. Additionally, I lackconfidence to speak with foreigners becausemy English is not good.

  1. Learning English in English speaking country is better than learning English in Thailand. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Please support your opinion with some examples or details.

Sample response:

I agree with the statement that we should learn English in an English environment so that we can develop communicative English more quickly. I have a group of friends who went to study and work abroad and their English got better in a few months.
