ST. MARY MEDICAL CENTER

INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

CURRICULUM

Harbor-Hematology/Oncology Consult Service

A.  ROTATION PURPOSE: The purpose of this rotation is to provide clinical experience with patients having hematologic and oncologic diseases in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

B. The CLINICAL EXPERIENCE may include patients having:

1. Anemia

2. Thrombocytopenia and Thrombocythemia

3. Coagulation Disorders

4. Leukemias

5. Lymphomas

6. Solid Tumors

At Harbor, the resident will see very interesting cases and quickly learn the basics of chemotherapy for a wide variety of malignancies. The resident should not worry about understanding the intricacies of chemotherapy; the resident should just try to become familiar with the general approach to treatment.

For Oncology cases, the resident should focus on the type of cancer and supporting evidence (biopsy of tissue results), staging information, comorbidities, and functional status (i.e. can they tolerate the chemotherapy). Remember to review CT scans or other imaging in person. On Heme consults, remember to call down to the lab to get a peripheral smear for rounds (x2235).

Reading, discussion, and other educational activities should be directed at understanding the pathophysiology, clinical course, and management of these disorders.
