About us

We are a small UK-registered charity promoting innovative best practices in a rural community in south west Uganda – www.kiuganda.org. Starting from a family connection, we support village development by empowering women, children and their families to improve livelihoods and enhance community well-being through self-reliance. Visiting volunteers assist in project work and engage in research, dialogue and partnership experience. We increasingly work in partnership with a local Link Group (KICS-Uganda) and local stakeholders.

Since 2009 we have received £72,475 from individuals and trusts in the UK who wish to support our work [in Kashare sub-county, population 23,000]. Our turnover in 2012 was £23,411 and in 2014 we expect this to be £40,000.

Our main initiatives are:

·  A women’s microcredit scheme [Grameen Bank style] that provides loans for starting small businesses, with 510 loans paid out so far. The women get complementary agricultural training for borrowers to improve produce and climate adaptability.

·  Smokeless stove building to help women’s health and use of time as well as the environment , with 230 households having stoves so far.

·  A programme for 60 orphaned and vulnerable children and facilitation training to 10 staff to provide material and psycho social support, also to carers or guardians, with the objective of securing livelihoods, strengthening community support and enhancing education

·  Smaller projects such as school links between schools in the UK and in Kashare (two in operation and two underway), an essay competition, craft sales.

Our UK functioning has so far depended entirely on voluntary effort. A Board of Trustees is responsible for the financial, legal and strategic oversight of the charity. Trustees are involved in the day to day work of the charity, including project work and fund raising, mostly through Working Groups. The Board meets quarterly.

We are particularly looking for trustees in the areas of financial strategy, publicity and marketing. Digital expertise and practical knowledge of charity law would be very welcome.

Core attributes for KICS Trustees

Ability to contribute to a developing and innovative small organisation; commitment to the value of partnership through dialogue and to collaborative working with our partner organisations; experience and interest in Ugandan development would be an advantage.
