WASA-NABIN PROGRAM COORDINATOR
ODAWA NATIVE FRIENDSHIP CENTRE
PROGRAM:
The Wasa-Nabin Urban Aboriginal Youth Program has been implemented to provide urban Aboriginal youth between the ages of 13 – 18 with the support, tools and healthy activities which would build upon and foster their inherent ability to make healthy choices.
The Wasa-Nabin Program Worker shall be responsible for the following:
To ensure the development and implementation of a full range of program services as identified in the Friendship Centres Annual Service Plan.
To ensure that the Wasa-Nabin program is grounded in culture based youth development principles and practices.
To conduct a needs assessment for youth and to develop a plan of action to meet the needs of youth referred to the Wasa-Nabin Program.
To co-ordinate individual and group activities (physical, social) as required to meet needs of program clients.
To assist in youth development through increasing life skills, safety awareness, nutrition and healthy physical development activities, anti-violence training and youth diversion initiatives.
To increase cultural understanding of youth and their families.
To engage in “one to one” counselling and peer support, as youth require.
To initiate and maintain contact with community agencies, organizations to access
resources, supports and referrals for youth
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, general lifestyle of Aboriginal people and traditional
lifestyles
Shall possess education and work related experience in the social service work area, preferably in youth related work.
Knowledge of social, cultural and recreational needs and interests of children and youth.
Ability to work professionally, collaboratively with youth and their families as well as agency, community and agency personnel.
Satisfactory criminal records check
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Organizational and file management skills
Above average computer skills
Ability to work flexible hours
Possession of a valid driver’s licence
First Aid and CPR an asset
