Guitar Hero Tournament

This document informs readers about the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament fundraiser. Inside, information regarding the event’s time, date, and location, the projected profits, and instructions on how to operate this event are found. This document goes into great detail about every aspect of the fundraiser.

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament fundraiser provides an opportunity for the students of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology to have fun, while also raising money. On Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, a setting called “Tug of War” is available: a competition based on the players’ scores. The player with the highest score wins the song. The score calculates the notes successfully played, and the highest note streak. The ability called “Star Power”, achieved through successfully playing a group of special highlighted notes, increases the score points when activated, and lasts between four to eight measures of the song.

Many consider this style of play the competitive version of this game. Another style, called “Free play” compares to “Tug of War”, only without another player. In this mode, a success meter appears. The success meter consists of a Red, Yellow, and Green section. The meter judges how well you are playing the song. When red, you are in danger of failing. Failing a song means the song stops suddenly and the player needs to either restart the song or quit. When yellow, the player currently plays averagely. Yellow equals about forty to sixty percent hit-miss ratio. When green, the player cannot be in immediate danger of failing. The event requires at least three Xbox 360 consoles, four guitar controllers, and three Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock game discs. All of the items listed can be borrowed from students on their permission, or bought if necessary.

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament provides a night of fun and music, and raises money. Later on, the details of the profit are broken down into greater detail. The fundraiser will provide the students of MAST and their friends an evening of great entertainment. This event provides them a fun, social, and/or competitive night to remember.

Event Description

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament fundraiser provides a relaxing night of fun. This event gives the students of MAST and their friends a chance to come together in the name of rock. The event consists of a competitive-style play, and a free-style play. Two players both play the same song in the competitive mode, and whoever has the most points win. The players acquire points in two different ways: Overall notes hit and longest note streak. These two ways to acquire points go hand in hand. The longer the note streak, the higher the amount of notes hit increases. A massive amount of points occur if a large note streak occurs.

In a separate room from the Tournament a setup for Free Play, though more casual, entertains the non-competitive students. Free Play, like the competitive style, shares the same main mechanics, with a few exceptions. First, the removal of the second player. This means that only one person can play at a time. Second, the addition of a success meter. The success meter judges how well you are playing the song. If red, the player can fail easily. If yellow, the player currently plays averagely and still in some danger of failing. If green, the player currently plays the song well and in no immediate danger of failing. If the player fails the song, the next person in line gets to play. This fundraiser can be entirely student-run, with the exception to hooking up cables and moving heavy objects.

The Tournament’s set up in a specific way. The setup depends on the amount of people attending. If an even amount of people attend the setup becomes much easier. The participants are paired in twos. These pairs compete until two people are left. However, with an odd number of participants, one of the first pairs goes through two battles before moving on.

This event has worked in the past. In Henry Hudson Regional School, David Long once held this exact same event at his school. He worked with the current band teacher to create a Guitar Hero Tournament and the event was successful. His version of the fundraiser might have been to raise profit, but either way many people attended. The benefits of this fundraiser are that the event can excite people. Too many fundraiser events are boring, such as car washes or candy bar sales. This event provides students and their friends’ fun, no matter what skill level they are. Since the event isn’t boring, more people would want to come, which means more fun and money for all.

The admittance sales are the key to raising funds. To participate in the event costs $5. If someone wants to be a part of the actual tournament, the cost increases to $8. Donating a console, controller, game disc, or time to help reduces their cost by $3. If a student gives time to help set up or take down the event or donates a controller, their cost drops down to $2 for free play and $5 for competitive play. This provides an incentive for students to help out each other. To get participants to pay for the tournament, give a small prize of any sort to the top three winners. For example, free lunch for a full week.

Students of MAST, their friends, and anyone else they wish to bring may attend the event. One can only attend this event if they know a student of MAST, and has received permission.

Event Time/Date/Location

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament will occur during the winter months. During the winter not many afterschool activities are going on, people are not seeing each other as much, and most nights are free. This time would be ideal for a two to three hour event such as the Guitar Hero Tournament. If the event were hosted any other time, many conflicts with the event and other scheduled activities arise.

The Tournament would be held during the evening, for the same reason as stated in the “when is the event” section. During the winter the sun sets at about 5:30pm to 6:00pm, too dark to do anything. The Tournament should start between 5:00 and 7:00 on a Friday. Students do not have to worry about waking up early to catch their bus the next day, they can sleep in. Just in case the Tournament lasts longer than anticipated this gives the players more than enough time to finish.

The Free Play and Tournament are held in two different buildings. If they were both in the same building the players would have a hard time hearing the song they’re playing. The Technology room in MAST houses the Tournament. Building 77 houses the Free Play. In both of these buildings the rooms are large enough to move the desks easily.

To get to Building 77 and the Technology room, refer to Appendix D.

Event Preparation

For this event to work, Dr. Christopher must grant permission. Via the BBS site, a request for a meeting with Dr. Christopher shall be emailed. Permission to see if the event can be held, and finally request a date between November 15 and February 9 are asked. Describing the event takes place afterwards. With Dr. Christopher’s help ,the event can be easily scheduled.

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament requires only an average amount of preparation. This measurement of time is compared to an event like a marathon or class trip. Below, please find the tentative order of preparation for this event:

1.  Set up rooms (move chairs, desks, tables, and anything else in the way) See Appendix H for the floor plan.

2.  Inspect Xbox 360s, guitar controllers, televisions, sound systems, and wires for defects

3.  Plug in Xbox 360s to televisions

4.  Connect wireless controllers to the Xbox 360s

5.  Set up sign-in desk with chair and forms

6.  Test each game by playing a song

7.  Test each game again by playing a different song

8.  Go through preparation procedures a second time

Forms for the Leadership Hours Log are in Appendix F. To gain Leadership Hours in this event, one must demonstrate leadership. This includes helping to set up the event, helping to take down the event, and telling other helpers where to put objects.

Forms for the Community Service Hours Log and Certificate are in Appendix G. Community Service and Leadership hours are handled differently. For example, if a student volunteers to help set up the event, but does not attend, that would be under Community Service Hours. The student volunteers to help with an event they are not attending. If a different student volunteered to set up the event and attends, that would classify under Leadership Hours. The student who volunteered to assist, but did not attend was helping the event form. The student who volunteered to help but did attend improved the overall quality of the event.

Event Special Needs

The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament event requires certain equipment. Desks are required for the sign-in sheet along with chairs. Someone needs to stay at the desk. If someone does not stay at the desk, people could attend without paying. The desks and chairs already in the buildings are used for this purpose. Another desk and chair are required to keep track on the tournament.

Sound systems are not required. Existing televisions in the buildings provide enough sound on their own.

Extensions cords are required for this event. The cords on an Xbox 360 are not long enough to reach the television. A ladder must be on site in order to reach the televisions. No tools other than extension cords and a ladder are necessary.

Duct tape can be used to hold down some wires, if they touch the floor. Duct tape could also serve as a method of direction. For example, blue duct tape could lead to building 77 for the tournament, and black duct tape could lead to the Technology Building for free play.

Bathrooms are in both building 77 and the Technology Building. In Building 77, bathrooms are located near the side that faces MAST Way. In the Technology Building, the bathrooms are located in the locker rooms.

Miscellaneous needs are recommended, but not needed. Traffic cones could help direct participants to the correct areas. Rope could also serve this purpose. Rope could also be used to outline the playing area. The event does not require these needs, but they can work and are recommended.

Event Instructions

Setting up the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament event can be done the same day as the event. Setting up this event takes place after afterschool events such as Drill Team are completed. Refer to Appendix A for the tentative Calendar of Event.

A few requirements are needed to host this event. A chaperone must be in each building to make sure people are behaving. If the participants are not behaving properly, this puts future events in jeopardy. Food and drinks would also be needed. With the food and drinks, cups and plates would be needed. Refer to the Day of Event Schedule in Appendix B for more information.

After the completion of the event, clean up takes place. The tables and chairs need to be put back to their original spot in the Technology Room and Building 77. The remaining food and drinks are removed, and general cleaning needs to happen. This includes mopping (if needed), collection of garbage, and making everything clean. Please refer to Day of Events Schedule in Appendix B.

In addition to raising a profit, the primary goal of the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Tournament also provides many students with an enjoyable night of fun. For safety reasons, a small lockbox, located at the sign-up desk will hold the money. Only the person hosting the event has the key. The person manning the sign in table puts the money in the open lockbox. The treasurer holds the money and keeps the money aside for future events and/or field trips.

Even after cleaning up, more activities need to happen. The Xbox 360s need to be disconnected, the wires must be packed up, the money must be safe, and nothing can be left behind. Everything that was used specifically for this event must be taken down. This includes anything used to direct participants, flyers, tables, and chairs.

If an injury occurs, standard medical kits are in each room, and access to a telephone if a need for an ambulance arises. If a fire occurs, fire extinguishers are in each room. After the fire department informs the school that safety has been restored, the Tournament continues. If death occurs, the event stops and undergoes reevaluation for safety.
