I. Atlantic South America:

1. If the world’s continents were pieces of a puzzle, the east coast of South America and the west coast of Africa would fit together almost perfectly (Refer to page 48).

2. What are the buffered states that lie between Brazil and Argentina? What is the textbook definition for a “buffer state”? Urugauay and Paraguay= Buffer means a seperator of/ Like buffers on a train track

3. How large is Brazil and what are the major landforms that are found there?

It is the largest country in S America, Three Major landforms= Amazon region/ Brazilian Highlands/ Brazilian Plateau/

4. Where does the name “brazil” come from?

From Pau-Brasil/ a type of tree indigenous to Brazil

5. What are “favelas” and why do we find them all around the world, like in downtown Portland?

See picture on page 237 they are huge slum area nearly as bug as downtown Vancouver/ Thousands of shacks/ some have power and toilets/ On the land without ownership=Squatters

6. What was the countries capital prior to 1960 (May not be in the textbook)?

Rio De Janeiro

7. How many people was Brazilia designed to accommodate? How many live there now according to the text?

500,000 now 2 Million people!!!

8. What is the “Campo Cerrado” region from the text?

A frontier land of savannas and dry woodlands that extend east to west across central and southern Brazil.

9. What is the “Amazon” and why have natives their had little contact with the outside world?

Humid-Tropical Rainforests that cover the Northern and Western parts of Brazil/ Dense rainforests make transportation and interactions with the outside world very difficult. The culture there remain much the same it was thousands of years ago!

10. What exactly is a “Jivaro Man”?

The Jivaro are a native tribe of Brazil that has been in existence since the time of the Maya and Aztecs/ They remain very primative and true to the ways of the past.

11. Do you feel sorry or happy for the man pictured on page 238? Why or why shouldn’t we “help” him (Explain your response in 5-7 sentences)? USE THE BACK OF THIS PAGE FOR THIS ONE!!!

12. Why is there a “growth pole” in Manaus? Why are growth poles important for a country and why would other countries get involved in Manaus (List the pros and cons of this entreprenureal venture)?

Manaus is the Amazon’s largest city. Was primitive for years, but recently this city of natural rubber, nuts, medical plants, and fine woods has been designated a “Growth Pole”/ Growth Poles are metropolitan cities that are given official help to strengthen their technology and industry= Usually the supporting countries like the USA have something to gain by helping these cities!!!

WHY GET INVOLOVED= NO or Little TAX, Sell your goods to them with no import taxes or fees…Many reasons!!!

13. What do the Cartograms on page 239 show? Why are cartograms useful to geographers?

Population size and increase from 1950 to 1990

14. What are some of Argentina’s most important economic activities? Why doe the picture on page 240 look very much like something you would see out in Washougal, Amboy, or Yacolt?

See page 190 and compare that climate (Close to Marine-West Coast) and look at the Longitude @ approx 40 degrees!

15. What nationality are most Paraguans? Who has most of the money and is this common in many third world countries like Paraguay?

16. Why does Paraguay look to have a bright economic future? Which other South American countries have this same type of technology available to them?
