This talk explains why this most unusual former turnpike road came to be planned and built and why, though it was a feat of highway engineering, it was a commercial failure. Led by Geoffrey Hartland. Ecclesall Woods have archaeological remains from the Neolithic through Romano-British to early Sheffield industry. The 100 or so hectares have at least 500 archaeological sites, so this walk can only cover a selection.

Join the Wednesday morning volunteers to help maintain the Botanical Gardens at their best. Enter the green metal gate next to the toilet block at the Thompson Road end of the Gardens. Sign in at the greenhouse near the classroom (please check website for change of venue once building work starts). Tools are provided, please wear appropriate clothing including sturdy footwear & gardening gloves.
