Course Description:

The course focuses on understanding the philosophical basis of communication science, such as the roots, paradigms, standard of truth, and school of thought. The course provides reflections on three philosophical basis on science: ontology, epistemology, and axiology of communication in order to develop communication science and practice in proper manner. The course provides the understanding of the object of study of communication, both material and formal objects. It also discusses ethical perspectives on communication practices, such as in mass media, business & marketing communication, and public relations to create harmony in social interactions. In addition, the course promotes local perspective in understanding communication phenomena.

Course Objectives:

After completion of the course, students are expected to understand basic philosophy of communication science which involves ontology, epistemology and axiology, and to conduct self-reflection about communication study and practice and their responsibility to the science and society. In addition, the course aims to mouldstudents who have good character, such as rational inquiry, integrity, respect, and personal excellence.

Assessment:

  1. In class quiz& presentation= 20%
  2. Study case based learning through regular tasks= 10%
  3. Mid test= 30%
  4. Final test= 40%
