SECTION 095113 - ACOUSTICAL PANEL CEILINGS
Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.
This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.
Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes acoustical panels and exposed suspension systems for ceilings.
B. Related Requirements:
Retain subparagraph below to cross-reference requirements Contractor might expect to find in this Section but are specified in other Sections.
1. Section095133 "Acoustical Metal Pan Ceilings."
Retain paragraph below if cast-in-place attachment devices are required for Project.
C. Products furnished, but not installed under this Section, include anchors, clips, and other ceiling attachment devices to be cast in concrete.
1.3 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS
Retain "Preinstallation Conference" Paragraph below if Work of this Section is extensive or complex enough to justify a conference.
A. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at [Project site] <Insert location>.
If needed, insert list of conference participants not mentioned in Section013100 "Project Management and Coordination."
1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product.
B. LEED Submittals:
1. Product Data for CreditMR4: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content. Include statement indicating costs for each product having recycled content.
"Product Data for Credit EQ4.1" Subparagraph below applies to LEED-NC, LEED-CI, and LEED-CS; coordinate with requirements for sealants.
2. Product Data for Credit EQ4.1: For sealants, documentation including printed statement of VOC content.
"Laboratory Test Reports for Credit EQ4" Subparagraph below applies to LEED for Schools.
3. Laboratory Test Reports for Credit EQ4: For ceiling systems, documentation indicating that products comply with the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers."
Retain "Samples" Paragraph below for single-stage Samples, with a subordinate list if applicable. Retain "Samples for Initial Selection" and "Samples for Verification" paragraphs for two-stage Samples.
C. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color and texture specified, 6 inches (150 mm) in size.
D. Samples for Initial Selection: For components with factory-applied color finishes.
E. Samples for Verification: For each component indicated and for each exposed finish required, prepared on Samples of size indicated below.
Delete first option in "Acoustical Panel" Subparagraph below if size of panels makes requirement impractical.
1. Acoustical Panel: Set of [full-size] [6-inch- (150-mm-) square] Samples of each type, color, pattern, and texture.
2. Exposed Suspension-System Members, Moldings, and Trim: Set of 6-inch- (150-mm-) long Samples of each type, finish, and color.
1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
Retain "Coordination Drawings" Paragraph below for situations where limited space necessitates maximum utilization for efficient installation of different components or if coordination is required for installation of products and materials by separate installers. Coordinate paragraph with other Sections specifying products listed below. Preparation of coordination drawings requires the participation of each trade involved in installations within the limited space.
A. Coordination Drawings: Reflected ceiling plans, drawn to scale, on which the following items are shown and coordinated with each other, using input from installers of the items involved:
1. Suspended ceiling components.
2. Structural members to which suspension systems will be attached.
3. Size and location of initial access modules for acoustical panels.
4. Items penetrating finished ceiling including the following:
a. Lighting fixtures.
b. Air outlets and inlets.
c. Speakers.
d. Sprinklers.
e. Access panels.
f. Insert item>.
5. Perimeter moldings.
Coordinate "Qualification Data" Paragraph below with qualification requirements in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" and as may be supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.
B. Qualification Data: For testing agency.
C. Product Test Reports: For each acoustical panel ceiling, for tests performed by [manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency] [a qualified testing agency].
D. Evaluation Reports: For each acoustical panel ceiling suspension system[and anchor and fastener type], from ICC-ES.
Retain "Field quality-control reports" Paragraph below if Contractor is responsible for field quality-control testing and inspecting.
E. Field quality-control reports.
1.6 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Operational and Maintenance Data: Submit maintenance instructions to Owner for recommended cleaning materials and methods for panels ad trim. Include precautions for use of and composition of cleaning materials detrimental to acoustic materials and trim.
1.7 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS
A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.
Revise "Acoustical Ceiling Panels," "Suspension-System Components," "Hold-Down Clips," and "Impact Clips" subparagraphs below to suit Project. If preferred, replace percentage with a specific number of panels and pieces of each suspension component and their lengths.
1. Acoustical Ceiling Panels: Full-size panels equal to [2] <Insert number> percent of quantity installed.
2. Suspension-System Components: Quantity of each exposed component equal to [2] <Insert number> percent of quantity installed.
3. Hold-Down Clips: Equal to [2] <Insert number> percent of quantity installed.
4. Impact Clips: Equal to [2] <Insert number> percent of quantity installed.
1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Retain "Testing Agency Qualifications" Paragraph below if Contractor or manufacturer selects testing agency or if Contractor is required to provide services of a qualified testing agency in "Field Quality Control" Article. Qualification requirements are in addition to those specified in Section014000 "Quality Requirements."
A. Testing Agency Qualifications: Qualified in accordance with National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for testing indicated.
B. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution.
Indicate portion of ceiling represented by mockup on Drawings or draw mockup as separate element.
1. Build mockup of typical ceiling area as shown on Drawings.
Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups.
2. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.
1.9 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver acoustical panels, suspension-system components, and accessories to Project site in original, unopened packages and store them in a space where they will be protected against damage from direct sunlight, surface contamination, and other causes.
B. Handle acoustical panels carefully to avoid chipping edges or damaging units in any way.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
Manufacturers and products listed in SpecAgent and MasterWorks Paragraph Builder are neither recommended nor endorsed by the AIA or ARCOM. Before inserting names, verify that manufacturers and products listed there comply with requirements retained or revised in descriptions and are both available and suitable for the intended applications. For definitions of terms and requirements for Contractor's product selection, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."
2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Retain "Seismic Performance" Paragraph below for projects requiring seismic design. Delete paragraph if performance requirements are indicated on Drawings. Retain option if International Building Code seismic design requirements prevail. Coordinate requirements with structural engineer.
A. Seismic Performance: Acoustical ceiling shall withstand the effects of earthquake motions determined in accordance with [ASCE/SEI7] <Insert requirement>.
B. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTME84; testing by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
Retain one option in "Flame-Spread Index" Subparagraph below. ClassA systems have a flame-spread index not exceeding 25 and a smoke-developed index not exceeding 50; ClassB systems have a flame-spread index not exceeding 75 on face side; and ClassC systems have a flame-spread index not exceeding 200 on face side. Most products available in the U.S. are ClassA.
1. Flame-Spread Index: Comply with ASTME1264 for [ClassA] [ClassB] [ClassC] materials.
2. Smoke-Developed Index: [50] [450] <Insert value> or less.
Retain "Fire-Resistance Ratings" Paragraph below only if products specified are part of a fire-resistance-rated assembly. Indicate rating, testing agency, and testing agency's design designation on Drawings.
C. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Comply with ASTME119; testing by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
1. Indicate design designations from UL's "Fire Resistance Directory" or from the listings of another qualified testing agency.
2. Humidity Resistance: Ensure panels are dimensionally stable at up to 100 percent relative humidity at temperatures ranging from 32 to 104 degF (0 to 40 degC) without having to acclimatize tiles.
2.2 ACOUSTICAL PANELS, GENERAL
Retain this article with "Acoustical Panels" Article.
Retain "Low-Emitting Materials" Paragraph below if required for LEED for Schools Credit EQ4.
A. Low-Emitting Materials: Acoustical panel ceilings shall comply with the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers."
B. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of acoustical ceiling panel and supporting suspension system from single source from single manufacturer.
Retain "Recycled Content" Paragraph below to specify recycled content if applying for LEED Credit MR4.
C. Recycled Content: Postconsumer recycled content plus one-half of preconsumer recycled content not less than <Insert number> percent.
D. Stone Wool (Mineral Wool) Panels: Meeting UL GreenGuard Gold Certification for VOC emissions.
E. Acoustical Panel Standard: Provide manufacturer's standard panels of configuration indicated that comply with ASTME1264 classifications as designated by types, patterns, acoustical ratings, and light reflectances unless otherwise indicated.
"Mounting Method for Measuring NRC" Subparagraph below represents standard mounting referenced in ASTME1264. Revise if testing units with another mounting method is required for Project.
1. Mounting Method for Measuring NRC: TypeE-400; plenum mounting in which face of test specimen is 15-3/4 inches (400 mm) away from test surface in accordance with ASTME795.
F. Acoustical Panel Colors and Patterns: Match appearance characteristics indicated for each product type.
Retain subparagraph below only if patterns are exclusively specified by using pattern designations in ASTME1264.
1. Where appearance characteristics of acoustical panels are indicated by referencing pattern designations in ASTME1264 and not manufacturers' proprietary product designations, provide products selected by Architect from each manufacturer's full range that comply with requirements indicated for type, pattern, color, light reflectance, acoustical performance, edge detail, and size.
2.3 ACOUSTICAL PANELS <Insert drawing designation
Retain this article with "Acoustical Panels, General" Article.
Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Paragraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed.
A. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Rockfon; [Alaska] [Alaska dB] [Artic] [Color-all] [Contour] [Facett] [Hygenic Plus] [Impact] [Industrial Opal/Nature/Black] [Island] [Koral] [Medical Air] [Medical Plus] [Medical Standard] [Multiflex Baffles] [Pacific] [Sonar] [Sonar Activity] [Sonar dB] [Tropic] or comparable product by one of the following:
1. Armstrong World Industries, Inc.
2. United States Gypsum Company.
3. Insert manufacturer's name>.
Do not assume that every combination of fire-resistance rating, classification, pattern, color, light reflectance, acoustical rating, edge detail, thickness, and size listed under each product description is available. Before retaining salient characteristics, verify availability with manufacturer.
B. Performance Criteria: Provide acoustical panels, prefabricated, with white painted textured and/or smooth face, qualified for use in fire rated ceiling assembly, UL labeled, and complying with the following performance criteria as determined by ASTME84 and UL723, and as specified.
1. Flame-Spread Index: Zero.
2. Smoke-Developed: Zero.
C. Color: [White] [Black] [As selected from manufacturer's full range] [Match Architect's sample] [As indicated by manufacturer's designation] [As indicated on Drawings] [As indicated in a schedule] <Insert color>.

Retain "Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC)" Paragraph below unless demising walls are full height from structural floor slab to structural floor slab or roof. Note that CAC of ceiling systems with penetrations for lighting and air devices is typically lower than reported CAC values of ceiling panels by as much as 10 points.
F. Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC): Not less than [20] [22] [23] [25] [30] [33] [35] [37] [40] [43] <Insert CAC>.
Retain "Articulation Class (AC)" Paragraph below when required by Project. Note that AC and NRC are highly correlated.
