FSH111 Photography 1: use camera controls to create a body of work

Developed by Ruth Frost and Moira Cordiner

The original sheet needed revision becauseit did not have a criterion that allowed Ruth to judge the body of work. Instead, the sheet skewed the overall grade that could be awarded by emphasising skills, but not their application to development of the concept and its expression in a linked series of photographs. The revised criteria will inform the revision of the learning outcomes to make the links between criteria and outcomes more explicit. This will require addition of an outcome about expressing concepts (see table below).

Synopsis of the task and its context

This is the first task in this introductory unit and is weighted 25%. It is in two parts. The first part requires students to explore a concept while developing technical control of the camera, specifically aperture and depth of field, and knowledge of the photographic medium. They demonstrate this control via a contact sheet of images and document their explorations in a journal. The second part of the task requires creating a cohesive body of work consisting of five black and white photographs that express their concept.

Learning outcomes (unrevised) / Task-specific criteria
On completion of this unit you should be able to: / To complete this task you should:
2. extend your ideas for assignments through exploration and reflection
1. discuss formal qualities of photographic imagery (e.g. composition, tonal quality, use of light) and use this to reflect on both your own imagery and the work of artists relevant to your ideas / experiment and explore images to develop a concept:
  • experiment with visual ideas and techniques to create images
  • research and analyse the work of artists related to your concept
  • provide evidence of your processes in your journal

4. apply the fundamental principlesof photographic language to your photographs.
3. demonstrate technical competence in the black and white digital photographic medium / apply introductory knowledge of camera and computer techniques, and fundamental principles of photographic language to demonstrate control of the medium (as per the task)
express your concept as a body of work (series of photographs)
