Unofficial CCS Minutes - June 6, 2006

Next year's CCS meetings will be Mon., Jan. 8, 2007 and Tues., June 5, 2007.

CCS Trials will be Sat., May 19, 2007.

CCS Finals will be Fri., May 25, 2007.

San Jose City College is the planned site of next year's meets.

Review of 2006 Tournament

It was requested that the trash cans be emptied occasionally especially on the trials day.

The Discus site should be mowed and bleachers supplied for the spectators.

CCS will supply batons for the meet next year. Apparently, some of the batons used were questionable.

It was requested that the shot putters be encouraged to use chalk so that a mark would be left on the sport turf.

Tori Anthony qualifying in 5 events was discussed. Like our league, the PSAL does not have pole vault as an official event. She competed in 4 events at her league meet and qualified in all 4. At the SCVAL Qualifier, she competed in the pole vault to get a mark, thereby qualifying in her 5th event. When the PSAL turned in their entries, she had scratched out of 3, therefore only competing in 2 events at CCS. When this was brought to the attention of the CCS office, Hal Harkness was consulted and he said since she only competed in 4 events at league and the pole vault was competed at a different meet with no bearing on her league meet, she was okay as long as she was only entered in 4 events at CCS. A discussion was held about future seasons and whether a pole-vaulter from a league with no official pole vault should only be allowed to compete at 3 events at their league meet. The committee decided to leave things as is and felt this was a league decision.

Officiating at the CCS Meets

Some of the leagues are not supplying knowledgeable workers or enough workers to run the field events. Also, they did not bring any equipment to run the events.

Milpitas throws coach had an issue with the girls' shot put, although the issue fortunately did not prevent his athlete from advancing to the state meet. The issue was his thrower entered the circle from the front on her first throw and the officials called no mark. There is no rule on how an athlete enters the ring only how they exit. Her first throw should have been measured.

At the boys' triple jump, things were so bad that 12 jumpers were taken to the final.

At the CCS finals, the SCVAL turn judge for the 1600m relay had left; fortunately a turn judge from the other side came over to cover and was there to notice an infraction.

Steve Filios would like to have committees for the field events and have them chaired by knowledgeable officials. The leagues listed in the by-laws, Section 9 would still supply the helpers.

The CCS hardship rule was discussed. It was noted that the SCVAL league commissioner has his own "set of rules". It was decided that the rule should remain as is and be enforced appropriately.

Other discussions

The new rule about each league having 2 automatic qualifiers was discussed. Nancy said the rationale for passage of the change was that in other sports all leagues have 2 automatic qualifiers. The vote for the by-law change was close. Most leagues were unhappy by the change. See appendix for various handouts analyzing the effect.

Coaches' Alliance

In order for the Alliance to keep a seat on the State committee, the membership must go up. All coaches should consider signing up. Check Hank's website for an application.

State Meet

Several media concerns were discussed.

There were no trainers or ice on hand, plus there was a lack of communication.

The shot/discus were held at the same time, making it hard for coaches with athletes in both, to see them compete. They requested the starting times be staggered by 1 hour for the finals.

The honest effort rule was not enforced consistently. The winner of the girls' 1600m did not bother to compete in the 3200m. David Klech skipped the 110m hurdle finals based on a note from his dad but competed in the 300m hurdles. The rules clearly state that a note must be from a doctor.

The dress code was not enforced. Some of the athletes looked slovenly.

The 2007 State at large times are located in the appendix.

Cross Country

Fresno is asking for $17,000 to have the State Cross Country Meet at Woodward Park in 2007. All previous years, the state has not been charged. The state is currently looking for alternate sites; preferably one that has held large meets in the past.

Appendix

The following handouts analyzed whether all leagues deserve 2 automatic qualifiers.
