For Students

Student Text

The student text has two main parts: Erster Teil: Lektüre and Zweiter Teil: Grammatik. The reading section is organized thematically, with the focus on a different theme in each of the ten Themen. Each theme is developed in three types of texts. The first type consists of several authentic cultural texts, the second is a poem or a song, and the third is a literary selection: a modern short story, a Märchen, or a screenplay. The texts and the accompanying exercises and activities of Kaleidoskop, Seventh Edition help students improve their reading skills, expand their vocabulary, learn to express themselves more accurately and idiomatically in both oral and written form, and gain greater insights into cultural aspects of the German-speaking world. The Grammatik section has ten Kapitel, which review important grammar normally covered in beginning courses and introduce new structures to expand students’ knowledge of grammar. The exercises are set up in a way that enables students to apply what they have learned about language patterns to a wide variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, fostering development of all four skills. The scene settings and content of many of the exercises reflect the topics of the Themen, reinforcing students’ awareness of cultural currents and perspectives.

In-Text Audio CDs

Packaged with Kaleidoskop, Seventh Edition, this three-CD set features recordings of all narrative texts in the book.

Student Activities Manual (Übungsbuch)

This manual is a combination of Workbook, Lab Manual, and Video Workbook.

Workbook (Übungen zum schriftlichen Ausdruck, Übungen zur Grammatik)

Activities in the Übungen zum schriftlichen Ausdruck are correlated to the Themen; they give students practice with the newly acquired structures and vocabulary and show them how to apply these in new situations. The carefully planned writing exercises give systematic guidance to students to improve their writing. The Übungen zur Grammatik supplement contextualized grammar exercises in the Kapitel of the student text and help students develop their writing skills.

Lab Manual (Übungen zum Hörverständnis, Mündliche Übungen, Pronunciation

Guide)

Exercises in the Übungen zum Hörverständnis correspond to the Themen and require students to react orally and in writing to the recorded material described in the SAM Audio CDs section below. The Mündliche Übungen are oral supplementary grammar exercises provided on the SAM Audio CDs. Direction lines and models of the exercises are printed in the Übungsbuch. The Pronunciation Guide describes the sounds of German and accompanies the Pronunciation Recordings on the SAM Audio CDs.

Video Workbook

The Video Workbook provides activities for pre- and post-viewing of the video.

SAM Audio CDs

This audio program contains recordings to accompany the lab manual part of the Student Activities Manual (Übungen zum Hörverständnis, Mündliche Übungen, Pronunciation Guide). The SAM Audio CDs are available for student purchase. A complete audio script is available on the Instructor’s HM ClassPrep CD.

Online Study Center

The Online Study Center contains the following:

• ACE Quizzes for each grammar topic following the sequence of the

Kapitel

• Web search activities related to the Themen

• German Web resources

Video (VHS)

The video features authentic footage from ZDF German television. There are 13 modules. Annotations in both the student text and the Instructor’s Annotated Edition indicate which modules can be used with which Thema. Pre-viewing and post-viewing activities in the Video Workbook section of the Übungsbuch guide students through the video segments, assisting them with comprehension and prompting them to react to what they have seen.

For Instructors and/or Institutions

Instructor’s Annotated Edition (IAE)

Annotations in the Instructor’s Edition provide specific teaching suggestions; additional activities related to the reading selections; variations for grammar exercises; background information on the names, places, and events mentioned in the reading selections; and detailed comprehension checks and interpretive questions for the poems. For the convenience of the instructor, answers to all grammatical exercises are printed in the margins. Statistics in the annotations reflect the most recent data available at the time of publication.

Instructor’s HM ClassPrep CD

This useful instructor’s resource contains the following:

• Testing Program: two complete tests for each Thema and one test for each

Kapitel, available in both Word and PDF formats. Tests on the Themen

check knowledge of the cultural texts and literary selections, and include

new texts as reading and listening comprehension items. While each test

is complete in itself, instructors can vary the test from class to class by

picking and choosing items from each. The tests also contain a listening

component (Hörverständnis) with texts recorded on the Testing Audio

CDs, and a speaking component (Sprechsituationen) with two situations

provided per Thema. Tests on the Kapitel reflect the topic of the corresponding

Thema. In contextualized format, they check comprehension

of the grammatical features using multiple-choice items, fill-ins, and

transformations.

• Scope and sequence chart

• Audio scripts

• Video scripts

• Answer keys for all grammatical exercises

• Answer keys for the Student Activities Manual

• Useful addresses for obtaining cultural information and materials for
