English 8 Book Reports
To keep those brains reading, all eighth grade students will be required to write a book report once a quarter on the book of their choosing. Students will be required to select a book by the second week of each quarter, and parents/guardians, as well as the teacher, will sign off on the book of choice. Students must pick a grade-appropriate book, and must select a book that they have not read previously.
There are five sections to this book report. These are as follows:
I. Introduction: The introduction paragraph must include:
v The title of the book
v The author
v The genre
v Your opinion of the book in the form of a thesis statement
II. Summary
v All six parts of the plot diagram: Hook, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
v This summary must be more than eight sentences long.
III. TWO Connections to yourself or the world. Connections might be:
v Risk Taking
v Relationships
v Individuality
v Goals and dreams
v Overcoming obstacles
v Current Events
IV. Literary connection: Identify THREE literary devices you have learned about this year in your story. These literary terms must also have a PAGE NUMBER for when they occurred. Some examples to help you brainstorm are:
v Conflict types
v Allegory
v Mood/tone
v Point of view
v Simile/metaphor
v Hyperbole
v Personification
V. Critique/Conclusion
v Now is your chance to tell me if you loved or hated this book. You must also give me two reasons why you did or did not like this book, none of that “I just didn’t, it was boring, it was lame” malarkey. WHY was it boring and lame? WHY was it the greatest book you’ve ever read?
The due dates for all of the book reports are as follows:
