About Developing the Young Workforce Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian:
Developing the Young Workforce, Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy; is about delivering a step change in employer engagement, making it easier for businesses to engage in a meaningful, appropriate and “outcome” driven way to help shape and recruit youth talent ensuring a positive destination for every young person in the region.
The Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian Regional group will take the lead on delivering a sustained step change in employer engagement. Our focus is on how employers can play an active role, both shaping and benefitting from Scotland’s education system.
Ambitions:
Deliver an improvement in employers’ engagement with schools and colleges in the region by encouraging and supporting more employers to actively collaborate with schools, colleges and other learning structures to better align skills supply and demand- delivering increased economic and societal impact from investment.
Encourage and support employers to open up job and development opportunities to more young people and invest in their career development- stimulating increased economic growth, productivity, and earnings.
How we will do this: We are ambitious to make a real step change in the opportunities for young people and how employers make a significant contribution to how this is shaped. To enable us to achieve our vision we must focus on employers playing an active role in SHAPING and benefitting from our regional education system through RECRUITING our young people.
Targets and milestones are based on 3 principals. It is vital for us to ensure:
Sufficient Scale: That we increase the pool of opportunities and support that is sufficient to provide every young learner with a good range of options.
Good Fit: That we have a pool of opportunities that is reflective of the diversity and richness of the local and wider economy to improve the draw into hidden high demand areas and matching with young people’s aspirations.
Good Quality: That we have a pool of opportunities that are of high quality to encourage young people to widen their career horizons, explore their options, consolidate their career goals, and help achieve their full potential
About the role:
Alongside the work of the Board, Team and Partnership the Regional Developing the Young Workforce group for Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian has a development fund for each year of delivery.
Through consultation with partners it was identified that there was a gap in the information produced for influencers regarding vocational pathways in education. It was identified that through DYW Funds we could add value by producing resources for influencers and a fixed term graduate intern role has been created to identify, define and produce resources for influencers demonstrating pathways in education to vocational learning and achievement.
