5th Annual Day of the Dead Celebration

Día de Los Muertos is one of Mexico’s traditional holidays reuniting and honoring beloved ancestors, family, and friends. It is an ancient ritual when the living commune with the dead – a mystical event when the veil is lifted between their two realms and they may share a day together. Día de Los Muertos is a time of celebration and a time to remember our deceased family and friends. Rather than to deny and fear death, this event teaches us to accept and contemplate the meaning of mortality and to celebrate life.

On October 25, 2014 Calvary Catholic Cemetery, in association with Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – Silicon Valley, will be presenting their 5th annual Día de Los Muertos celebration. This is the fourth year of partnership between Calvary Cemetery and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Catholic Cemeteries Día de Los Muertos celebration at Calvary Catholic Cemetery continues to grow to be San Jose’s premier event for Day of the Dead celebrations and is a favorite amongst the community. Other sponsors include Lima-Campagna-Alameda Mission Chapel, El Observador, and Sonia Orban-Price.

This celebration will include performances by local entertainers, singer Manuel Romero, Aztec dance group Capulli Tonalehqueh, in addition to Folklorico dance groups Folklorico Nacional Mexicano and Lincoln High School’s Xoctil Cultura; altar displays and artwork created by local Jr. high and high school students from St. John Vianney and Notre Dame High School, organizations, businesses, and individual artists; face painting, skull decorating, papeles picados, and much more.

The celebration begins with a traditional parade of song, dance, and prayer from Our Lady of Guadalupe church in San Jose to Calvary Cemetery. Upon arrival at the cemetery, Deacon Ruben Solorio will lead a prayer and the children’s choir from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church will perform a few traditional songs.

Food trucks will be on hand for the hungry crowd. This year’s trucks featured will include Takoz Mod Mex, Paddywagon Sliders and Fairy Cakes, who will offer festive flavors including churro, pumpkin spice, and apple pie.
