Data Sheet and Report

Be sure to refer to the checklist at the end of this document to check off each item as you check your work.

Directions: Collect and record your data. Calculate the height of the object. Be sure to show all of your work!

I’m using feet to solve the equation.

  1. Your measurements

Your height: 4.11 ft

Length of your shadow: 6.8 ft

  1. Measurements of the tall object

Length of the object’s shadow: 30.5 ft

Calculated height of the object (You will fill in this blank once you have done the calculations.): 18.43 ft

Questions

Directions: Use the data and calculations to answer the following questions and to write your essay.

  1. What is the tall object you chose to measure?

I measured a tree in my neighbor’s yard.

  1. Where were you when you measured the tall object?

I was in my neighbor’s yard when I measured the tree.

  1. Who helped you by measuring your shadow?

My mom helped me measure my shadow.

  1. Do you think the time of day during which you took your measurements would affect your data? How?

Yes because the measurements would be different depending on the time of day because the sun’s light on the tree and the tree’s surroundings is what causes the shadows. Therefore, if I measured the tree at six in the evening then the shadow would be bigger or smaller because the sun would be starting to go down instead of it starting to come up if we measured it at nine in the morning.

Essay

Directions: Use the information above to help you to describe the process and results of your work. This paragraph should be at least five sentences long. You’ll need to include complete sentences, proper grammar, and correct spelling.

I went with the 3.00 PM-5.00 PM option because I wasn’t ready to start it at the earlier time option because I woke up too late. I measured the shadow of my neighbor’s tree. After I measured the shadow of my neighbor’s tree, my mom measured my height against the side of the pantry door. We measured my height against the door and marked it on the door with a line and current date because we do that every time we check my height.

After I wrote down my height in its space, my mom and I walked outside to our driveway and my mom measured my shadow with our tape measure. After I gathered my data I solved the equation. First, I divided 4.11 by 6.8 and got 0.6044. Then, I multiplied 0.6044 by 30.5 to get you’re my final answer of 18.43 ft.
