FAFSA Opens October 1

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens at FAFSA.gov October 1. Seniors who want to be considered for college grants, need-based scholarships, work-study, and loans must complete the FAFSA. Complete the 2017-18 FAFSA, using 2015 tax information. Both student and parent need to get an FSA ID which confirms your identity and allows you to log in to US DOE websites. This takes the place of the old PIN on the previous FAFSA’s. If you have an old PIN, you can enter it and link it to your FSA ID. If you never had a PIN or FSA ID, create one ahead of time at the FAFSA.GOV website.

CSS Financial Aid Profile Opens October 1

The CSS Financial Aid Profile at css.collegeboard.org will open October 1. This is required by specific colleges if you want to be considered for financial aid, as well as the Kamehemeha Schools Na Ho’okama a Pauahi need-based college scholarships. Check with your college if they require it or not.

PCHS FAFSA Night – October 27

Seniors and parents who need assistance completing the FAFSA should PCHS FAFSA Night on Thursday, October 27, 6:00pm in our library. Start completing what you can at FAFSA.GOV before coming with your specific questions. Make sure to click on the 2017-18 form. Complete the RSVP form available in C103 or with your counselor to reserve a computer station.

Colleges That Change Lives College Night – October 6

Eight colleges will have short presentations and a mini-fair at the Pineapple Room at Macy’s Ala Moana at 6pm. Colleges are Centre College, The Evergreen State College, Goucher, McDaniel, Reed, St. John’s College, Whitman, and Willamette.

Free ASVAB at PCHS – Wednesday, November 16

College Horizons For Current 10th & 11th Graders

You must be either Native Hawaiian, American Indian, or Alaska Native, with a 3.0 gpa in your core courses to participate in this summer pre-college program at various colleges. Financial aid available. Go to www.collegehorizons.org Deadline: February.

Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Program for Juniors

Low-income11th graders may apply for this free 7-week summer program at Princeton University. Must have an unweighted cumulative gpa of at least 3.6, taking the most rigorous courses offered, above average scores on the PSAT, ASPIRE, SAT and/or ACT. Go to www.ledascholars.org for details. Spring Early College Courses at PCHS

Apply now to take Early College classes on the PCHS campus this Spring . Go to www.hawaii.edu/dualcredit to submit and print out the application. LCC will offer History 151 and Math 140. HCC will offer Sociology 100. Bring the dual credit application to room C103. If you are currently in a Fall course and will take another course at the same college in the Spring, you do not need to submit an admissions application. If you take a course through a different college, you must also submit that specific Spring 2017 admissions application online.

UH Manoa College Opportunities Program (COP)

Seniors who want to attend UH Manoa but do not meet the minimum admission requirements still can get admitted through this summer program in which you must dorm at UH Manoa. Go to www.hawaii.edu/cop to apply by December 8.

UH Manoa HUI Program

Free summer program for seniors who will attend UH Manoa. Free 3-credit class, free books and bus pass. Must be either Pell Grant eligible thru the FAFSA, or an underrepresented population at UH. Go to www.manoa.hawaii.edu/omsshui/ to apply.

Free Common Application Workshops

Free workshop for seniors who plan to use the Common Application offered by Pacific University. No obligation to apply to Pacific University. RSVP for one of these dates at www.pacific.edu/AppWorkshop 6-7pm: Sept. 27, 29; October 11, 13; November 15, 17.

National Security Agency High School Work Study Program

Juniors may apply for jobs as Office Assistant or Computer Aide. Work from September to June your senior year, possible extensions to August. Minimum 2.5 gpa, U.S. Citizen, 16 years old by Aug. 31. Must be taking either business or technical computer classes, graphic arts or manufacturing this year. Must have transportation to the Schofield Barracks office, and have a half day schedule senior year – must arrive to work by 12:30pm, four hours a day, 5 days a week. YMCA Hiring Group Leaders for Their After School Programs

59 schools on Oahu have positions open for group leaders who organize, plan, and supervise activities for grades K-6th grade. Up to $10.20 per hour based on experience.

Seafarers International Union Programs

Don’t mind being out in the ocean for part of your schooling and for your job?

Two programs for 18 year olds. First is a one year apprenticeship to learn about ship operations, sanitation, firefighting, etc – guaranteed first job after completion. Second is a 11-week Steward program in which you learn ship food safety handling, galley operations – after 240 days, you can upgrade to Certified Chief Cook. Go to www.seafarers.org No tuition. AES Engineering Scholarship

Seniors in any major may apply for a $500 scholarship based on an essay on the topic:

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF)

Seniors who are Asian or Pacific Islanders, with a minimum 2.7 unweighted gpa may apply for scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000. Emphasis on community service and academic achievement, at or below the poverty level, first generation in family to attend college. Must submit the FAFSA and one recommendation. AXA Achievement Scholarships

Seniors who demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community, or work may apply for scholarships.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange

Co-op Scholarship Program

175 merit scholarships totaling 4.5 million dollars for seniors who apply to one of ten WACE partner colleges (Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Rochester Institute of Technology, etc). 3.5 minimum gpa. DAR Good Citizens Aloha Chapter Scholarship

Seniors who display dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism may apply for a $250 State award, national winners earn higher amounts. Part 1 is application, transcript, and 2 letters of recommendation. Part 2 is a timed essay. See Mr. Oda in C103 if interested in applying by November 30.

Gromet Foundation Scholars Program

Seniors with a minimum 3.5 gpa may apply for renewable $2,000 grants if you attend Hawaii universities, and $5,000 grants if you attend mainland universities. Also get a $1,000 grant for Study Abroad. Family income must be 150% or less of the 2016 federal poverty guidelines (see www.familiesusa.org) . Details at www.grometfoundation.org, where there is a link to hundreds of other scholarships for Hawaii students. Application in C103. Deadline for the Gromet awards is October 28.

Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship

Seniors who are family members of an active or retired member of the ILWU Local 142, and attend any campus in the University of Hawaii system. Go to harrietbouslog.com/scholarship and apply before April 1.

Hawaii Pacific University HPU4Hawaii Scholarship

You can earn a 4-year full-tuition scholarship to HPU by developing and idea to create positive social, environmental or economic impact for Hawaii. Register at www.hpu.edu/hpu4hawaii and sign up for a workshop.

HonorsGradU Multimedia Scholarship

Seniors can apply in any or all of the 4 categories – art, creative writing, music, or photography. One $1,000 scholarship for each category available. Go to http://honorsgradu.com/scholarship/ for details. Deadline: April 16.

Horatio Alger Scholarships

Scholarships from $7,000 to $25,000 for seniors who demonstrate critical financial need, involved in community service and other activities. Must want a bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum 2.0 gpa. Go to www.scholars.horatioalger.org . Deadline: October 25

Charles R. Kendall Scholarship

Must be a senior who is a dependent of an HGEA member in good standing for at least one year from January 13, 2017, the scholarship deadline. Based on financial need, academic achievement, personal letter, and 3 recommendations. Apply at www.hgea.org/kendallscholarship

Na Ho’okama a Pauahi Scholarships

Need-based scholarships for students from Associates to Doctorate degrees. Preference to students of Hawaiian ancestry. Average award $6,000. Go to www.ksbe.edu/college. Application window October 3 to February 17.

New Warrior Scholarships (UH Manoa)

Seniors planning to attend UH Manoa may apply for the Regents and Chancellor’s Scholarships with one application. Go to www.hawaii.edu/fas/info/scholarships.php

NSA Stokes Educational Scholarship Program

Seniors who plan to major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering, U.S. Citizens, 3.0 gpa, minimum 25 ACT, leadership abilities, may apply for up to $30,000 per year. Work for the NSA in the summers, and guaranteed job after graduating college.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) Scholarships

Get up to $180,000 in college scholarships through the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force. Go directly to the R.O.T.C. website for the branch you are interested in.

Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award

Women age 14 to 18 who made a significant/noteworthy difference in your community through volunteer efforts, may apply for $500 for yourself and the cash awards to the charity of your choice. Application in C103. Deadline: November 15

STAR Scholarships (UH Manoa)

Seniors need to apply to UH Manoa first (don’t need to get a reply yet), then apply for over 400 scholarships. Go to www.star.hawaii.edu/scholarship. Deadline: February 15

Visionary Scholarship Program

Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 for grades 9-12. Transcript, essay required. Apply at www.AmericanCollegeFoundation.org. Deadline: May 1.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards

Seniors with at least a 3.0 gpa and participate in one of the 43 sanctioned sports, may apply to win 100 scholarships from $1,000 and up, gift cards, a trophy, and trip to the Heisman awards.
