Post title: Business Development Manager – Start Up

Based at: Cornwall College, Camborne

Reports to: Start Up Manager

Grade/salary scale: CC39-CC49 £27,249 - £31,998

Fixed term contract until 31st October 2018 funded through the European Regional Development Fund.

Role Purpose

As an experienced start-up specialist, you will support businesses and graduates in Cornwall to fulfil their growth potential. Using the business development tools provided you will ensure that the quantitative and qualitative targets of the start-up programme are met. You will work with start-up businesses to help them to develop their plans, identify and organise any specialist support they may need and meet with them regularly to keep their plans moving forward. When they are ready to take on their first employee, you will support them through the graduatejobs programme or the first employee support package.
Main duties and responsibilities:

·  Providing 1-1 support to a portfolio of start-up SME’s throughout Cornwall & Isles of Scilly to plan, develop and deliver business growth

·  Facilitate and support Greenhouse and workshop activities for groups of Start-up businesses

·  To work with Oxford Innovation Growth Coaches to ensure that the best package of business support is provided to allow businesses to grow sustainably.

·  Meet the quantitative and qualitative targets of the ERDF funded graduates for growth offer as part of the Cornwall Business Start Up programme.

·  To support businesses in all stages of the recruitment process when taking on their first employee. This will include job scoping, the identification of KPIs and critical success factors for projects, recruitment advertising, interviewing with businesses and support throughout the recruitment process.

·  Support the graduates and businesses throughout the lifespan of the projects, recruit appropriate academic/mentor support and ensure the business is signposted to relevant agencies to support their growth.

·  Provide graduates with project management support, coaching and training throughout their projects.

·  Support businesses through the funding and claim process, ensuring they are providing timely evidence of match funding

·  Signpost business owners, directors and key decision makers to other ERDF funded business support that will deliver growth opportunities.

·  Maintain up to date knowledge of business support agencies and services available locally, regionally and nationally.

·  Develop and maintain effective and long-term relationship with partners, businesses, graduates and support agencies.

·  Maintain database and CRM systems relating to communications and interventions with businesses. This will be across both Unlocking Potential systems and shared information systems with Oxford Innovation, The Cornwall Growth Hub and others as appropriate.

·  Undertake other projects and responsibilities as directed by the Programme Director, Marketing and Operations Manager and the Start Up Manager.

·  Promote project activities and achievements through networking, presentations and working with marketing, PR and communications teams across the partnership.

·  Provide regular information through appropriate management information systems to the management team.

·  To maintain a through up to date knowledge of ERDF funding criteria

·  To ensure effective communications relating to the responsibilities of the role.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

Essential

·  A relevant Degree or equivalent.

Experience

Essential:

·  Industry relevant business-to-business work experience at a management level

·  An understanding of business management, growth and development particularly in relation to growth and innovation in SME’s

·  Understanding and experience of working with Start-up businesses

·  Specialist or general experience of supporting Start-up Business E.g. accessing finance, marketing, business structures, business planning

·  Understanding of the local business and commercial landscape

·  Experience of establishing the support needs of a business

·  Demonstration of success in goal-orientated project management

·  Target driven and results orientated

·  Recruitment experience

·  Negotiating and influencing

·  Partner and stakeholder management

·  Working knowledge of Microsoft Word / Excel/ Outlook / PowerPoint/Microsoft Dynamics

Desirable

·  Experience of working with SMEs or Start-ups

·  Experience of working in Business Support

·  Understanding of Financial Accounts

·  Experience in using CRM systems

·  Knowledge or experience of working with statutory, educational, voluntary and commercial sectors

·  An interest in marketing and promotion

·  Team leading, people development or management experience

·  Experience of working with graduates

·  Experience of using business diagnostic & planning tools, particularly Forum 21 & Business Model Canvas

·  Knowledge of European Funding

Special Conditions:

The post holder will be based at home and will be required to travel throughout Cornwall; a driving licence is therefore essential. This position is initially fixed term until October 2018and part funded by the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), part of the European Structural Investment Fund (ESIF) portfolio 2015 to 2020.
