Study Events

  • Anatomy (Cardiovascular, Integumentary & Immune Systems): Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, integumentary (skin) & immune systems. One study sheet can be used during test.
  • Disease Detectives: Investigating the study of disease, injury, health, & disability in human populations, focusing on Population Growth. One study sheet can be used during test.
  • Dynamic Planet (Physical & Geological Oceanography): Using process skills to complete tasks related to physical and geological oceanography. FOUR Study Sheets can be used during test.
  • Entomology: Testing ability to identify insects and selected immature insects by order and family on the official list using a dichotomous key. One study sheet and oneField Guide can be used during test.
  • Fossils: Demonstrate knowledge of ancient life with emphasis on fossil identification and the ability to answer questions on classification, habitat, ecological relationships, behaviors, environmental adaptations and the use of fossils to date rocks. ONE Field Guide and ONE 3-ring binder can be used during the test.
  • Green Generation: Demonstrate an understanding of general ecological principles, the history and consequences of human impact on our environment, solutions to reversing trends and sustainability concepts. One study sheet can be used during test.
  • Meteorology: Demonstrate an understanding of the Earth systems that influence World Climate and Climate Change. Two study sheets can be used during test.
  • Solar System: Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the properties and evolution of extraterrestrial ice and water in the solar system. TWO study sheets can be used for test.

Lab-Based Events

  • Can’t Judge a Powder: Test & characterize one pure unknown substance and then, based only on data they collect, answer a series of questions about the substance. Students are able to bring an assembled test kit of materials. (Teacher Contact – Mrs. Gillespie)
  • Crime Busters: Given a scenario, a collection of evidence, & possible suspects, students will perform a series of tests, which along with other evidence or test results will be used to solve a crime. One3-ring binder plus specified testing material can be used during the test. (Teacher Contact - Mrs. Gillespie)
  • Crave the Wave: Students will demonstrate knowledge and process skills needed to solve problems and answer questions regarding all types of waves and wave motion. Based on 25-50% hands on tasks and 50-75% theoretical written questions. One 3-ring binder is allowed for the test.
  • Road Scholar: Interpret & understand map features using a variety of state highway & USGS topographic maps. Reference materials are allowed for the test.

Building Events

  • Air Trajectory: Design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles into a target and collect data regarding device parameters and performance.
  • Bottle Rocket: Design & construct up to TWO rockets to stay aloft for the greatest amount of time.
  • Bridge Building: Design & build the lightest bridge with the highest structural efficiency that can span a given opening.
  • Elastic Launched Glider: Design, construct and test elastic-launched gliders to achieve the maximum time aloft.
  • Robo-Cross: Design and build a robot capable of performing certain tasks on a prescribed Field.
  • Simple Machines: Construct a Simple Machine device (class 1 lever), test the lever to determine an unknown mass of an object; then take a written test on your understanding of simple machines. One 3-ring binder can be used for the test.
  • Wheeled Vehicle: Design, build, and test one vehicle that uses a non-metallic, elastic material as its sole means of propulsion to travel a specific distance and around an obstacle as quickly as possible and stop as close as possible to a finish point.

Think on Your Feet

  • Bio-Process: Lab-oriented competition involving the fundamental science processes of life science & biology.
  • Experimental Design: Design, conduct, and report the findings of an experiment that you conduct during the event time.
  • Picture This: Team members take turns drawing representations of a set of scientific terms/concepts while the other team member(s) guess the term being drawn.
  • Write It, Do It: Writing a description of an object and how to build it, so that your partner can use the procedures to recreate the object given the same parts.
