Monday

Reading
/ Read for 45 minutes. Record in your reading log.
READING THROUGH MULTIPLE LENSES
Readers, think about how to read your biography through both lenses tonight. Read through the lens of story to find out what happened. What were the major events in your subject’s life? Then notice when the text signals for you to read through the lens of reading for information. Gather that information. You might fill in the boxes and bullets you worked on today, or you might start new ones. Each time you gather information, pause for a moment to think about how that information connects to your subject’s life. Try to fill up a notebook page.
Writing / Tomorrow we take our writing on-demand assessment, where you have to show all that you have learned about information writing in one piece in 45 minutes.
  1. Look at the third grade checklist that is attached to your homework to review all the things good information writing should have.
  2. Set a timer for 45 minutes (or look at a clock and used elapsed time to find what time it will be 45 minutes from now).
  3. In your writer’s notebook, write an informational piece that includes everything from the checklist, and make sure you are done before the 45 minutes are up.
  4. Have someone read your writing and check off on the checklist how well you did.

SPY on yourself as a reader
Readers, we’ve spent some time in this unit talking about how your reading strategies are similar and different based on whether you are reading a fiction text, a narrative nonfiction text, or an expository text. But here is the truth. You, as a reader, need to be flexible enough that you can alter your method of reading based on your choice, and there are lots of reasons for reading a text one way or another. Today, will you make yourself a small stack of nonfiction texts that are different from each other? Maybe one is a list of facts, one is a biography, one is an article in a magazine, and one is a picture book.
Will you read one of them, watching how you read it? Spy on yourself. Then read another, another, and another, doing the same thing. Watch how the kind of text you are reading changes the way you read—and doesn’t change the way you read. Then—here is the hard part—try to read in flexible ways. Read the biography as if it is a list of facts, and then switch and try reading it the same way you read a super-exciting fiction book. Take notes on your reading and be ready to talk to others about what it was like for you to try to be a super-flexible nonfiction reader.
Writing / Tonight, write a reflection in your writer’s notebook of what you learned in this unit. What do you now know about information writing that you didn’t know in second grade?
If you need some ideas to get started, look back at your information writing checklist.
Math / Complete worksheet - Study the 9 times table.

Content / Reread the article Brazil Today, then answer questions 6-9.

Wednesday

Reading / Read for 45 minutes. Record in your reading log.
Reflect on your journey through unit two Reading to Learn. Write a brief summary of what you learned. Then think about how you can transfer what you learned into other areas of your life. Think about the strategies you learned and the goals you set. Set two new goals for yourself as a reader taking into consideration everything you learned through this unit.
Writing / When we get back to school next week we will begin writing literary essays. Literary essays are when you write five paragraphs about an idea you have about a text. Choose a fiction book from your baggie. What is the character’s trait? Write as much as you can in your writer’s notebook and this character and their trait using details from the text.
Math / Complete the exemplar titled: Insects in Jars!
It is meant to be a tricky math problem but be persistent in solving it and show all your
work!

Content / Reread the article Brazil Today, then write a summary about the article. Be sure to include the main idea and supporting details. It will be collected on Monday!
