“The Joy of the Lord”

Nehemiah 8:1-12

This passage provides the conditions necessary for the experience of joy, especially from a corporate point of view.

The first condition is Instruction. Vs. 1-5, 7-8.

What grabs your attention as you read over these verses?

Why do you think it was it important for the entire Torah to be read to the nation every seven years?

What applications would you make to a family or to a church in light of these verses?

Do you utilize a method or a guide to help you to assimilate scripture? Is our church’s pattern of sending the passage for the sermon a few days before Sunday a help to you?

The second condition is Adoration. V. 6

What impresses you about this verse?

Hebrews 12: 22-24 provides a glimpse into the reality of our assembly in worship, as New Testament believers. What aspects of it do you find enlightening?

Help can we be mindful of this reality as we sing praises every Sunday?

To what extent is corporate worship a serious priority for you and your loved ones?

The third condition is Commemoration.Vs.9-10

In the Old Testament, holy days were set apart for God’s people to rejoice as they commemorated their provisions from God. How does this practice translate to our lives today?

“The joy of the Lord is your strength,” is a memorable expression. When do you experience it as a reality in your life?

The fourth condition is Celebration. Vs. 10-12

Having fellowship meals was a common practice on “holy days” as a way of celebrating blessings and connecting with others.

Why are “fellowship meals” an important part of our church life?

How can having meals together(in a home or a restaurant) enhance our faith groups and serve as a way to welcome new people who visit our church?
