PE & Sport at Bishop Loveday in Term 5, 2016-2017

With this being a 5 week term we’ve certainly managed to fit lots of physical activity into a short space of time. Please read on for more details:

Curriculum lessons

This term has seen the following take place during PE lessons:

All pupils have been learning a Dance choreographed by Mrs O’Donnell & Mrs Delarue. This will be performed by all pupils as part of the opening ceremony of the Church & School Fete next month.

§  EYU – Have been practising their teamwork skills and putting them into practice during relay races and team games.

§  Year 1 – Have been dancing the Samba during indoor lessons. Bat & Ball skills including throwing & catching, aiming and games have been the focus for their outdoor sessions.

§  Year 2 – Dance has been taking place during indoor lessons and cricket skills have been practised outdoors. This has included: throwing, catching fielding and hitting.

§  Year 3 – Have been practising their striking & fielding skills. Lots of throwing, catching & hitting balls using Kwik Cricket equipment.

§  Year 4- Have had lots of striking & fielding practise. They have had chance to put these into games of cricket & rounders. During gymnastic lessons, the majority of 4SJ reached Level 6 of the BG Awards Scheme.

§  Year 5 – Have been receiving cricket coaching as part of the Chance to Shine Schools cricket scheme. Invited swimmers completed their Booster sessions at Spiceball. As part of their World War 2 topic all pupils learnt and performed Jitterbug & Jive Dances. Some demonstrated what they had learnt to parents in their assembly.

§  Year 6 – Following the completion of SATs, year 6 have started their swimming session at Spiceball. They have also been outside making the most of the good weather whilst playing Rounders and practising their sprinting techniques.

School Clubs

§  The same clubs have continued with the addition of an after school cricket club on Fridays. This has been run by a coach from the Chance To Shine Schools cricket program. This is being run at no cost to pupils. It is part of the package we bought in to, which also included curriculum coaching for year 5 pupils. The club has been well supported by pupils from years 4, 5& 6.

§  All School run football clubs, hockey, netball & table tennis clubs finished at the end of this term. Hopefully they will all resume in September. Most of these clubs are run or supported by a volunteer coach. We thank them for all their hard and experience. We couldn’t offer such a variety of clubs free of charge to pupils without your help.

Competitions

§  6 pupils from year 5 were invited to take part in a Tennis Day at Tudor Hall School. Coaching sessions in the morning were followed by a well-received lunch. The afternoon was a chance to put all those new skills into game situations against other schools.

§  The Netball team played a match against St John’s Priory. The team have really worked hard this year and showed with a 13-0 victory.

§  12 Year 3 pupils were invited to attend an athletics festival at Carrdus School. This is a very friendly event with an aim to letting pupils ‘have a go and mix with others’ rather than competition.

§  The NOSSP Mini-Red Tennis competition for year 3 & 4 pupils took place at Banbury Academy. A great performance from team BLS which resulted in them finishing as winners. They now qualify for the North Oxon Finals against schools from Bicester, Kidlington & Warriner partnerships. A full report is available on the website.

§  The NOSSP Kwik Cricket competition for years 5 & 6 took place at BGN. We entered 3 teams. A year 6 boys team (A team), a year 5 boys team (B team) and a year 5 girls team. The year 6 team were, once again, successful winning the competition. The year 5 team won the Plate for all B/C teams and the girls team finished as Runners-up. A hugely successful day for Bishop Loveday Cricketers. Both boys teams have qualified for the North Oxon Finals to be held next term in Kidlington.

§  The Table Tennis Club invited their peers from Bishop Carpenter to a competition during their last club session of the year. It proved a very friendly affair, with players enjoying competitive games and refreshments together. Bishop Carpenter proved a little too strong for our players and won the event. Congratulations to them, we look forward to resuming the club in September. Please see the website for a report.

§  The year 3 & 4 football club hosted their last match of the year. They played against Hill View with a tremendous final score, 8-4. What a way to finish the season. They are undefeated this year. We thank Mr Bridge for his hard work and commitment to the club.

§  The NOSSP Mini-Orange Tennis competition for years 5 & 6 pupils took place at Banbury Tennis Club. We entered 2 teams along with 5 other schools, 8 teams in total. Our teams finished 4th & 8th. Players had a great time and were a credit to the school.

Equipment

§  Please continue to bring in the Sainsbury’s Active Kids School Vouchers. We are hoping to place our order for new equipment in the first 2 weeks of next term.

Staff & courses

§  Sports co-ordinator attended a BGN NOSSP family meeting. Other schools present were: Hardwick, Orchard Fields, Cropredy, St Joseph’s & St John’s.
