The presentation in alignment with the content of DL@Web has focused also on the use of ICT support systems that are appropriate for students with disabilities.

Workshop Training of prospective students from the Kotor Institute for Education and Rehabilitation of hearing and speech disorders on distance learning studies

The workshop was organized by IERK in the framework of Tempus project “Enhancing the Quality of Distance Learning at Western Balkan Higher Education Institutions” DL@WEB, ref. no. 511126-TEMPUS-1-2010-1-RS-TEMPUS-SMGR, as well as Inter-Tempus coaching with Tempus SINC@HE Support and Inclusion of students with disabilities at higher education institutions in Montenegro – SINC@HE.

The workshop objective was to present possibilities of e-learning in higher education to secondary school pupils with hearing impairment. The workshop was conducted in the presence of sign language interpreters. Besides, four teachers were present and they gained the knowledge on how to successfully use e-learning tools in the classroom with student with hearing impairments. E-learning uses media that enables people with auditory problems to access content and interact in a fashion that overcomes many hurdles met in traditional school. Therefore it represents a potentially attractive way of studying at university level.

Pupils are introduced to general topics about options provided by e-learning. Then several practical cases of existing university courses were showed. Pupils are registered on Moodle platform for e-learning and had an opportunity to try several modules, such as test, forum and e-book. They are also introduced to educational games as an interesting tool that brings together learning and fun. Pupils already had everyday experience with internet applications and this connection with learning and formal education was accepted well, as a compound of variety of activities that could improve communication and be well accepted for eventual further education.

Most students showed high motivation to continue learning about distance learning as a form of teaching, so that the workshop completed with comprehensive discussion and numerous questions for possible further education through distance learning. The workshop was also accompanied with Mrs. Vujošević Arleta from the Ministry of education, Montenegro, who was supervising the training activities.
