Teacher Name:NilesWeek: 19
Tuesday 12/13/16
Course:Standards: / Health Sciences 1
LAFS.910.L.3.5b, LAFS.910.L.3.6, LAFS.910.SL.2.4, LAFS.910.SL.2.6, 09.0, 09.01, 09.06, 09.02, 09.04
Subject: / The Muscular System-Muscle Contraction and the Neuromuscular Junction / Bellwork / Review question about Abdominal Hernia
Objective / Students will act out the neuromuscular events that give rise to a muscle contraction. / Agenda / Bell work
In groups of six, students will be assigned rolls in the events of a muscle contraction. There are six roles.
Play Title: The motor neuron makes the muscle contract
Setting: neuromuscular junction
Players: Motor neuron (nerve cell)
Sarcolemma (muscle cell membrane)
Muscle
Acetylcholine
Sodium
Potassium
What happens:
- Motor neuron releases acetylcholine
- Acetylcholine binds to the sarcolemma
- Sodium flows into the sarcolemma
- Potassium flows out of the sarcolemma
- The muscle contracts
Essential Questions / What neuro-chemical events make a muscle contract?
Vocabulary
ELL Accommodations: / Motor neuron, sarcolemma, acetylcholine, sodium, potassium, muscle contraction, neuromuscular junction
Students may use translation dictionary; they will be working with other students.
Ticket Out- Students groups will plan and perform the play.
