San Diego County Chapter of CRA Scholarship
The California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) and the San Diego County Chapter of CRA are proud to present the 2016 San Diego County Chapter of CRA Scholarship application. This scholarship is for students currently or soon to be enrolled in the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality + Tourism Management at SDSU (students who qualify for SDSU’s TAG Program). High school seniors planning on attending a San Diego area community college and then transferring to SDSU’s L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality + Tourism Management may also apply. The application deadline is May 13. All materials must be mailed to CRAEF and postmarked by the deadline date.
High school seniors entering community college are eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship award. Students attending SDSU’s L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality + Tourism Management are eligible to receive a $7,000 scholarship award. This scholarship is renewable or up to two years of community college and up to two years at SDSU. However, students must reapply each year. For more information on SDSU’s TAG program, click here.
This scholarship is competitive and awarded to qualified applicants based on an application, an essay, previous experience and an interview. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Top applicants will be contacted for an interview with the CRAEF scholarship panel, comprised of educators and industry leaders, by e-mail or phone six to eight weeks after the deadline. Scholarships will be awarded in two payments following proof of enrollment in two semesters. The first half of the scholarship is paid in early September and is made payable to the school financial aid office. The second check is paid to the student for the spring semester, once proof of enrollment with nine or more credit hours and proof of good standing with the college requirement are submitted.
In addition to the San Diego County Chapter of CRA Scholarship, we encourage students to apply for other scholarships including the CRAEF scholarship. Please apply at www.calrest.org/scholarships. In addition, National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) offers scholarships. The NRAEF scholarship application must be completed online at www.nraef.org/scholarships. The completed online form should be submitted with the required documentation and mailed to the NRAEF.
Applicant qualifications
To qualify for a San Diego County Chapter of CRA Scholarship, the applicant must:
· be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
· be a California resident
· either:
o be enrolled or will be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours at SDSU in the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality + Tourism Management for two consecutive semesters or terms
o be enrolled or will be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours at a community college in SDSU’s local admission area in two consecutive semesters or terms with the intent to transfer to SDSU’s L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality + Tourism Management.
§ Freshmen:You are in SDSU's local admission area if you graduate from a high school in San Diego County located south of state route 56 and extending eastward, or a high school in Imperial County.
§ Transfers:SDSU local admission area community colleges are Cuyamaca, Grossmont, Imperial Valley, San Diego City, San Diego Mesa, San Diego Miramar, and Southwestern.
· have a minimum cumulative grade point average of
o 2.50 on a 4.0 scale for high school applicants
o 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for college applicants
· be in good standing with the school for the second half of the award
· have completed at least one grading term of a postsecondary program or be a high school senior going directly to a postsecondary school
· satisfy the minimum hours of industry-related work experience, paid or voluntary:
o 250 hours for high school students going into their freshmen year
o 400 hours for college freshmen going into their sophomore year
o 550 hours for students beyond sophomore year.
All work experience must be verified through paycheck stubs or a signed letter from employers. Do not send copies of a W-2.
Required documentation to be submitted with your signed application:
· An essay, which must be typed and double-spaced in a Word document.
· A copy of the applicant’s program curriculum from a college catalog or website with the major or degree, the number of credit hours and all degree requirements shown.
· A high school or college transcript. Transcripts do not have to be a sealed official copy, but must be from the school.
· Proof of the required restaurant and hospitality industry work experience as listed above. Proof can be given in the form of scanned paycheck stubs or a scanned letter from an employer verifying hours worked. Do not send copies of a W-2.
· Two letters of recommendation.
o One letter from a current or previous employer in the restaurant and hospitality industry
o One letter from an instructor or faculty member.
Please do NOT include ANY paperclips or staples. You may clip the entire package with one binder clip or paper clip but please do NOT staple or clip each section of your application. Also, please be sure to include ALL required documents including acceptance letters, transcripts and proof of industry hours.
Judging
This scholarship is competitive and awarded to qualified applicants based on an application, an essay, previous work experience and an interview. Top applicants will be selected for an interview with the CRAEF scholarship panel. Applicants will be judged on the following criteria:
· Quality of the application, including spelling, grammar, content, etc.
· Essay content, including quality of writing, word count, etc.
· Industry-related experience
· Personal interview
Notification
Applicants chosen for an interview will be notified six to eight weeks after the scholarship deadline with further instructions on the location and time of the interview. Winning applicants will be contacted and provided with information on how to claim funding. Scholarship winners are chosen once per year and the scholarships are paid over two consecutive terms.
