Job Description

The Executive Director is a key representative and advocate for business owners and employers in University City. The Executive Director acts as the chief executive and administrative officer of the Chamber and oversees all the functions of the office and the organization, serving as coordinator, advisor,

membership recruiter, and member advocate. The Executive Director is responsible for presenting programs and implementing the decisions of the Board of Directors and President of the Chamber, and is accountable to the Board and President.
The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the Chamber office operates in accordance with the Bylaws. When the Bylaws do not address a situation or procedure, the Executive Director shall act in accordance with the Executive Committee’s direction. Suggestions and ideas for activities or projects

outside the normal scope of Chamber work, which requires significant staff time or unbudgeted funds shall require the approval of the Board of Directors.

Membership Services

The Executive Director will plan, organize and oversee a range of services and events for members including:

  • Organize and promote monthly membership meetings, coffees, brown bag lunches, ribbon cuttings, networking, training seminars and legislative events.
  • Prepare agenda and related documents for monthly Board of Directors meetings.
  • Maintain website with event information and correct business information for the business directory, including the regular addition of new members.
  • Assist members with marketing support through access to our data, co-hosting events, promoting events and coupon specials through the website, and other assistance as requested.
  • Work with committee to plan and implement special events including, but not limited to “Casino Night.”

Administration

The Executive Director is responsible for general administration of the Chamber. Duties include:

  • Send out bills for membership and other services and record payments.
  • Send out monthly newsletters and weekly updates through e-mail.
  • Maintain other social media outlets including Facebook.
  • Prepare a yearly program of work to be approved by the Board.
  • Mail out membership letters and stickers.
  • Respond to all requests received by phone and website.
  • Serve on all committees except the nominating committee.

Marketing/Advertising/Public Relations

The Executive Director will coordinate a variety of advertising and promotional programs that include:

  • Coordinating the ad program in the City newsletter every other month that includes soliciting ads, billing, collecting payment all in a timely manner.
  • Coordinating the Welcome Wagon program for new residents and businesses once a year.
  • Working with other advertising media, including local papers, to coordinate group advertising programs.
  • Coordinate annual events including the Taste of U. City in May, Casino Night in the fall, and other special events as needed.
  • Developing and maintaining good relationships with other U. City organizations including the Loop SBD, City Hall, Library, school district, and the variety of non-profits in U. City.
  • Provide press releases and other information to media sources including newspapers and City publications.

Implement Initiative With City

The Executive Director will implement programs as outlined in the agreement with the City’s Retail Sale Tax Board in the areas of long term economic development, marketing and training. This will include working the City to develop, maintain and promote a property data website, coordinate a series of business development workshops, and work with the public library to promote their technology training program to our business community.

Qualification and experience

Required:

•Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
•A minimum of two years of related experience

•Excellent communication skills – written, oral and presentation.
•Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage people individually and in groups at all levels.
•Strong fund-raising, economic and community building skills.
•Strong project management and organizational skills.
•Ability to work independently and take a great deal of initiative.
•Basic levels of proficiency with business software include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as a basic understanding of social media.
•While standard hours are 8:30am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed. This job requires more than 40 hours a week and is not compensated with overtime pay.
