A BRIEF NOTE ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC SCENARIO OF ASSAM.
Assam is the gateway to the North-East of India. It is basically an agrarian State. Inspite of having ample resources it lacks to compete with the other States of India mainly due to the negligence of the Central Government. As a result the inhabitants of this area are deprived of various facilities which are otherwise enjoyed by residents of other States. Economic backwardness is a burning problem of this region. So much so that in some areas the acquisition of basic primary education is a far cry. The existing vernacular medium schools are in deplorable condition and do not have adequate requirement to fulfill the basic needs of the students. Due to lack of infrastructure, learning apparatus, inadequate teaching staff etc. the children do not benefit from these schools. The State Government too cannot provide aid to the schools for their upliftment because the main challenges before the Govt. are : providing compensation to the flood affected people (huge losses are caused annually by floods in various parts of the State) , employment generation in the region, population boom, to combat terrorism etc. which (in their opinion) needs to be addressed first. The need of the hour is upgradation of primary schools which is possible only through assistance from different areas. Without it these schools , which cater to a large population group would wither away and leave the youths of the State illiterate and unemployed adding to further dreadfulconsequences.

After visiting a couple of primary schools around Guwahati which do not have adequate funds, we have considered the G.U Model L. P. School ( Assamese Section) , a fit case for assistance due to the following reasons:
* Most of the students of the school come from the tribal belts of the surrounding area and belong to the underprivileged section.
* The school authorities have failed to meet the needs of the students due to inadequacy of funds.
* Given an opportunity to tackle the hurdles, the school has an ample scope to set a positive example to the other schools of vernacular medium which are also on the verge of closing down.
* Last but not the least the school is located in such an area which is easily reachable by the team members.
