Third Grade
Summer Project
Directions: After reading the book selected from the NCTS Third Grade Summer Reading List, students need to choose and complete one of the project ideas listed under Part 1 below. Next, students are required to complete Part 2 for the book they chose(Questions and Glossary – see details below). Finally, students will be required to do a class presentation after returning to school from summer break (see Part 3 below for details).

Part 1 ~ Choose one of the following projects to complete for the book you read.

“Book in a Box” ~ Decorate a box to represent the book and fill it with objects that symbolize different aspects of the story.

Book Timeline ~ Use words and pictures to make a timeline of important events from the book.

Main Character Model ~ Make a 3-D model of the main character and write an interview with that character.

Setting Map ~ Make and label a detailed map of an important setting from your book.

Scrapbook ~ Make a scrapbook with items and pictures that are important to the life of the main character and to the story.

Part 2

•Questions(required) ~ Write ten questions based on the book. Five of the questions can be about general content (“thin” questions)with a one word answer or few words, but the other five must require more thinking (“thick” questions)and will need to be more than a yes/no or one word answer.

•Vocabulary (required)~ Create a ten-word glossary of unfamiliar words from the book.

Part 3
Student Presentation(required)~ Students will be required to present his/her book project to the class when returning to school (Projects are due August 12th and presentations will be on August 13 and 14. In the presentation, the student will conduct a “show and tell” about his/her project and then share information about a minimum of three literary elements from the story (setting, characters, conflicts, climax, or resolution).
