*Wednesday, October 16th: PSATs for all 10th and 11th grade students starting 8am sharp!! Students are to bring a math class approved calculator and #2 pencils.

*Wednesday, October 23rd: GRHS College Mini Fair from 11:15am to 1:15pm in the high school gym.

*Wednesday, November 13th: 9th & 10th grade Parent Breakfast: 8:00am-GRHS Media Center-important information for parents about academics, extra-curricular activities and post high school planning.

SENIORS:

For those of you applying to college, at this point you should have completed the following:

·  Use Naviance for the most efficient method of managing your college applications!

·  INFO YOU WILL NEED FOR COLLEGE APPS: school code 310435, class size is 146, GPA scale is 4.0, GPA is weighted, School Counselor phone is 973-429-8309, School Counselor FAX is 973-429-3531, our school does not provide rank.

·  Request 2 teachers to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. **Envelops and stamps are no longer required! Keep in mind that these letters are provided by the teacher as a courtesy. Complete your brag sheet, Parent brag sheet, & resume via Naviance.

·  The College Essay. Be certain to have someone proofread and edit your essay. Check out www.essayedge.com or www.accepted.com.

·  If you are applying “Early Action” or “Early Decision” to any college, please be sure to read and understand the stipulations to the process. Remember that these applications have a much earlier deadline.

·  Make sure to read the directions to every application thoroughly. Some schools have different requirements.

·  Keep in Contact with your School Counselor during the college admissions process. Inform your counselor of your admissions status for each of your schools.

·  SATs and ACTS: Colleges will not accept scores sent by high schools. Go to www.collegeboard.org to send your SAT scores and www.act.org to send your ACT scores.

·  Athletes considering Division I or II sports must register at www.ncaa.org .

·  Financial Aid information can be found at www.finaid.org, www.studentaid.ed.gov, and www.fafsa.ed.gov.

·  College Visits: Continue to visit colleges and attend information sessions. Many colleges are coming to GRHS!! See the list in the Guidance Dept.

JUNIORS:

·  The GRHS School Counseling Department is holding a Junior Parent Breakfast on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 8am in the GRHS Media Center. This session will focus on post-high school planning including the college admissions process, standardized testing, & bridge year options.

·  Beginning Semester 2, we will be scheduling individual post high school planning and college advisement sessions. Details to follow.

·  SATs and ACTs: This is the time of year to begin considering taking the SATs and/or ACTS. Visit www.collegeboard.org or www.act.org for test dates and deadlines. See you School Counselor for assistance. Consider taking the Subject Tests; visit the web-site for dates and deadlines.

·  SAT/ACT Prep: explore course options at SimpleTuition.com/TestPrep

·  FAIR TEST: Many schools no longer require ACTs or SATs. Visit www.fairtest.org for a state by state listing of “test optional” colleges.

·  College Visits: We encourage you to visit colleges and to attend college information sessions here at GRHS. When planning a college visit, be sure to call ahead for tour times and other information. To attend information sessions, sign up in the School Counseling office.

·  Naviance: Please see your School Counselor for Naviance Login information and start your college search, resume’, and post high-school planning.

·  College Fairs: 2014 NJ/NY Spring College Fairs will be held April 23rd & 24th in Secaucus and April 6th at the Jacob Javits Center. Visit www.nacac.com for further information and times.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Most of the scholarships and awards have applications available online. If there is no web-site indicated, paper applications are located in the School Counseling Office.

·  The 7th Annual Create-A-Greeting Card: This is a $10,000.00 scholarship contest. Students must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of the greeting card. The student with the best design will win $10,000.00 scholarship and have his/her design made into an actual greeting card to be sold in our line. DEADLINE: January 16, 2013. ·  AXA Achievement Scholarships: For students who have been active in the community and/or who have overcome personal challenges.

·  Visit www.fastweb.com for scholarship information and for a scholarship “match” program.

·  Gates Millennium Scholars Program: This is a scholarship that is eligible to students who are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American. You must also be A US citizen or national or permanent resident of the US. You must have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 un-weighted on a 4.0. For further eligibility, criteria, and to apply please go to www.gmsp.org DEADLINE: 01/15/2014!!

·  Horatio Alger Association: $2500 to $20,000 Scholarships available to qualified students who have participated in co-curricular and community activities. DEADLINE: 10/25/2013!! Visit https://www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

·  LOCAL TALK: $5000 Scholarship-Public Speaking Contest. Visit www.localtalkprinting.com/home#!contest-info/cely. Frist round is 10/12/13!!

·  Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: Open to students who have taken part in community service activities over the past year. Online applications available at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit Once the form has been completed it must be submitted to our principal by November 5, 2013.

·  NJCPA: This scholarship is open to all NJ college-bound high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in accounting. Scholarships are awarded based on academic standing, standardized test scores, an essay and performance at a personal interview. Applications are online at njscpa.org/scholarships. DEADLINE: Completed applications must be postmarked by December 20, 2013.

·  Questbridge: scholarship and college info for low income students. Visit www.questbridge.org for information and applications.

·  SCAD Challenge: Scholarship Competition for all of the visual arts. Visit scad.edu/scadchallenge for info and deadlines.

·  Wendy’s High School Heisman: Win up to $500 in Gift Cards. Requirements: “B” average or better, participation in athletics, leadership. DEADLINE: 10/2/13!!
