Sherborne Abbey Primary School
The government is providing additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this. Below is an overview of how we decided to use this funding in 2016-17 and how we plan to use the funding this academic year 2017-18.
School Sports Funding Action Plan 2016-17 (£8,700)

- To pay for coaches to transport children to the Gryphon School for sports coaching.
Year 3 /
- Children to attend multi-skills sessions with other schools in the pyramid.
- Teachers more confident in teaching multi-skills.
- To provide trophies and medals and organise & run inter-school sport competitions between the Sherborne Pyramid.
- Competitions organised and run here at Abbey school and winners receiving medals and trophies.
- Competitions entered in football, netball, basketball, hockey, tennis, rugby, cross-country, swimming, rounders, cricket and athletics.
- 70% of children in Year 5 & 6 have played in a school team this year (2017)
- To provide a coach to transport Year 6 children to the Gryphon for transition sessions in the fitness suite and on the trampolines.
- Children using the Gryphon facilities and feeling more comfortable about using these facilities in Year 7.
- To run a cycling bikeability course for Year 6 to help promote healthy lifestyles and safer riding to school.
- More children riding safely to school.
- To ensure PE resources are available and of high quality to enable good teaching across the school.
- High quality resources being used confidently by all staff.
- To train Year 5 & 6 pupils as sports ambassadors for the school.
- Sports ambassadors involved in helping with clubs, assisting on the playground, helping in lessons and being role models for the school.
- To provide basketball coaching for KS2.
- Basketball skills improved in KS2 classes.
- Knowledge of staff increased.
- Talented children to attend Sherborne Area Basketball Tournament.
- Talented children signposted to South Coast Tigers Basketball club.
