Project #1- Envelope Holder

q  Lay out a piece of color acrylic to 3” x 7”.

q  Cut the piece of color acrylic out on the band saw. Stay 1/16” away from your line for sanding. Make sure you keep the masking paper on the acrylic to prevent scratching.

q  Go through the sanding procedure to get rid of all the blade marks and scratches. Start with the machine sanders and work your way through the different grits.

q  Use the buffing wheels and polish your edges. Again, keep the masking paper on your acrylic.

q  Once all the scratches are removed, get the piece approved by your teacher.

q  Remove the masking paper and engrave some detail on the front of the holder with the laser engraver. Make sure you place it on the correct part of the acrylic. This step needs to occur before the bending procedure.

q  Draw a line across the piece where the bends are position. Refer to the laminated diagram for spacing.

q  Pre-heat the strip heater and place the marker line on the acrylic so it lines up with the heater for your first bend. (Do the back bend first, than the middle bend, and finally the front lip). Again, refer to the diagram for the positions of the bends.
