Course Description: This course is designed to provide a solid foundation of mathematics that will enable the student to maintain a steady academic progression toward higher-order problem-solving skills and independent thinking in the area of mathematics.
Course Objective: Upon completion of this course, the student will acquire the knowledge essential to confidently enter the Mathematics 7 course.
Course Content: Students will have an understanding of the following concepts:
First Marking Period
Data Analysis: data, tables, frequency distribution, graphs
Number Theory: multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers, determine GCF and LCM for a group of numbers, decompose numbers, solve problems involving fractions, decimals, and percents, operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, converting fractions, decimals, and percent
Methods: In order to help students understand the required standards of this course, students will be exposed to math literature, math vocabulary, as well as writing in mathematics. Math instruction will be delivered through, but not limited to, the following methods: instructor-led discussions and lectures of new concepts and methods, cooperative grouping, use of manipulatives, and math games. Projects and writing activities will also be assigned. Evaluations will include, but not be limited to, pre-assessments, written tests, quizzes, student notebooks, completion of daily homework, collected homework, class work, and projects (performance-based assessment) with the use of rubrics.
Materials: Each student must have the following items:
Textbook used for this course is Holt Mathematics-Course 1.Holt, Rinehart and Winston 2007.
2” three-ringer binder divided into the following four sections: Daily Starters, Notes, Class Work and Homework
Notebook paper
Pencils (NO WORK COMPLETED IN PEN WILL BE ACCEPTED)
Colored pencils
12” ruler with customary and metric measurements
Glue sticks
Composition Book (Writing)
Time Schedule: Class time is five days per week. Students have two hours of math per day. It is very important for the student to complete assignments timely and to the best of his / her ability. Since mathematics is a cumulative subject, it is very important that the student master each concept well enough to use it as a foundation for future concepts. Homework is an important element of this mastery process.
Homework: The student is responsible for completing homework assignments and learning from them. STUDENTS MUST SHOW WORK AT ALL TIMES. Students will receive a homework participation grade. This is where homework is checked daily for completion and following directions. No make-up or extra credit assignments are substituted for neglected homework assignments. This work is graded according to the homework policy in the school’s handbook.
Student Evaluation: The student’s quarterly grade is determined by using a weighted average consisting of the following categories and percentage weights:
Test: 35%Class-work:30%
Project: 15%Homework: 10%
Quiz: 10%
Tutorial: Tutorial sessions occur on Mondays from 2:45 – 3:30. In order to attend a tutorial session, the student must first make an appointment by placing his / her name on the appropriate sign-up sheet by Wednesday prior to the tutorial. Permission to attend will be based on whether the instructor believes the extra practice is relevant to the student. (Students are expected to work during tutorial sessions. If a student disrupts the learning environment, then the student is asked not to return and parents are contacted.
