A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Dr. Virginia Daugherty Kratz.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dr. Virginia Daugherty Kratz, and we pause in silent reverence for her soul.

WHEREAS, Virginia Daugherty Kratz was born on November 11, 1923, a native of Independence, Kenton County, Kentucky, and she traversed these earthly bounds on January 17, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Daugherty Kratz was the loving daughter of the late Frank Daugherty and Virginia Hogreffe Daugherty; she was the loving mother of a daughter, State Senator Katie Kratz Stine of Fort Thomas, and a son, Dr. Robert Kevin Kratz of Cary, North Carolina; and she was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Daugherty Kratz graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in 1947, where she was one of nine women in her graduating class; she spent a year as a public health official in Florida, after which time, she returned to Kentucky as the public health officer for Owen, Grant, Gallatin, Pendleton, and Boone counties, becoming only the second woman in the state to hold this position, and where she was fondly referred to as "the lady doctor" to her patients; and

WHEREAS, after raising her children during the 1960s, Virginia Daugherty Kratz returned to the practice of medicine, doing her residency at Rollman Psychiatric Hospital in Cincinnati, where she practiced medicine for seven years until her health forced her into retirement; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Daugherty Kratz was a strong and independent woman who was born into a family with a rich medical tradition; and throughout her life, she exhibited exceptional courage, and contributed many years of dedicated medical service to her fellow man; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Virginia Daugherty Kratz has left a void that cannot be filled, and she is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Virginia Daugherty Kratz, and extends to her family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Dr. Virginia Daugherty Kratz.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Honorable Katie Kratz Stine, 15 Cliffview Avenue, Fort Thomas, Kentucky 41075.
