I Do: Share Alfie the Apostrophe to introduce contractions.
We Do: Model playing the contraction match game with the class to practice reading contractions.

Materials: Brainpopjr Contractions video, rubber gloves, word cards for contractions, band-aids
I do: Show Brainpop jr video on contractions. Model contraction surgery. Don your surgical gloves. Your patient is the words can and not. Cut out the “bad” part of the word and use band-aid with an apostrophe to fix the contraction.
We Do: Surgically repair a contraction together.
You Do: Students are put with a partner and given a group of “patients.” Partners fix the contractions with apostrophe band-aids. / Whole Group

I do: Review contractions by providing students with examples and ask students to identify the two words represented. Begin contraction sort.

I do: Introduce capitalizing holidays, product names, and geographic names using lesson ten from the Common Core Clinics (copies included in unit resources).
We do: Brainstorm names of holidays, product names, and geographic names. Do pages 58 and 59 together. Begin Capitalization Search. Add learning log entries on capitalization and discuss.
You do: Students will complete the Capitalization Search independently. / Whole Group
