Please feel free to ask for assistance should there be any section or item that you do not understand.

Your cooperation in following the policies and procedures of Mount Olive Elementary is greatly appreciated. The faculty and staff join you in helping your child reach his/her full potential as a student and as a contributing member of our society.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES (JEFCOED Policy 343.21 (5/28/92)

No student is to enter school property more than 30 minutes prior to the start of the official school day or remain on school property more than 15 minutes after the close of the official school day unless expressly authorized by the school principal, presently enrolled in an on site school child care program, participating in an authorized extra-curricular school activity or program. Students not picked-up by 3:15 will be sent to onsite day care for a cost of $15.00. Once a student is sent to afternoon care at 3:15, parents will be required to pay the $15.00 charge regardless of how long the child is supervised.

STUDENT ABSENCES (JEFCOED Policy 43.1)

Because the Jefferson County Board of Education has the responsibility of ensuring that every student between the ages of seven and seventeen receives an education, it shall be the policy of the Board to require all school age students under its jurisdiction, except those legally excluded from this requirement as established by state statutes and JCBE POLICY FILE: 441, to attend the public schools of the Jefferson County School System.

A student who is absent from school must present a written explanation of the absence from the parent, guardian, or other person having control of the student to the school officials within three days of the return to school. All physician excuses are subject to verification.

Parent excuses are limited to seven per year. After seven parent excuses, only a doctor’s excuse or an absence approved by the principal will be accepted.

In order to prevent absences from having a negative effect upon the student’s educational progress, and to meet the legal requirement that each student receive a minimum of 175 days of instruction, a student shall have the opportunity to make up any work which occurred during the student’s EXCUSED ABSENCES . Make-up work should be completed as soon as possible after returning to school. It shall be the responsibility of the student or the student’s parents or guardian to arrange with the teacher to make up work. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES will result in NO makeup work.

ATTENDANCE

IMPORTANT!

Student/Parent will be referred to Jefferson County Family Court when the student accumulates:

·  Seven (7) unexcused absences - Early warning

·  After seven (7) parent excused absences – a doctor’s excuse or special permission from the Principal will be required.

TARDIES

PUNCTUALITY is one of the most important lessons that we can teach our children. It is very important that children arrive at school ON TIME. Students report to the classrooms promptly at 8:00 and it is important that your child be here at that time. Any student arriving in the classroom after 8:00 is tardy. Many of the plans and priorities for the entire school day are discussed at the beginning of the day. If a child comes in late, the entire class is disrupted. In essence, much of your child’s success for the entire day depends on these early morning instructions and activities.

1.  If a child arrives after the tardy bell at 8:00 the parent will be required to come into the office to check the child in at school.

2.  A record of tardies will be kept and will be included in the child’s attendance records. Early departures are counted as tardies.

3.  Excessive tardies will be counted as a Class I offense resulting in early morning detention and will be reported to the Department of Student Services.

4.  Perfect Attendance Certificates will not be given to students with tardies or early departures.

CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES

1.  Parents checking students out of school must sign the student out in the office.

2.  Permission in written form must be sent by the parent if someone other than the parent is checking out the student.

3.  PLEASE No check-outs after 2:30 unless an emergency or extenuating circumstances.

5

STUDENT ILLNESS

Although school attendance is important, please do not send your child to school if he/she is too ill to be here. Children should never be sent to school with a fever. We must not only protect your child, but prevent the spread of infection to other students. Should it be determined that your child has a fever or becomes ill during the school day, you will be notified.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

1.  Each student receiving prescribed medication must have a Medication Administration form filled out and signed by the physician and parent/guardian.

2.  Each student receiving nonprescription medication (including cough drops) must have a completed Medication Administration form on file. This form may be obtained in the school office.

3.  Medications will not be accepted from a child. Student possession of any prescription drug or nonprescription drug is a Class III offense. The medication must be delivered by the parent/guardian to the office.

4.  Medications in a plastic bag or any container other than the original packaging will not be accepted. Prescription medications will only be accepted in the pharmacy-labeled container. The label should include the student’s name, doctor’s name, name of medication, strength, dosage, time interval and route. Parents may ask the pharmacist for two containers for the medication with one marked for school. *Nonprescription medications must be in a new unopened container.

5.  If your child’s dosage is ½ of a pill, parents must cut the pills in half before bringing them to school. School personnel will not be responsible for the division of any student medicine.

WITHDRAWALS

If a student is transferring to another school, please notify the Mount Olive School office. All textbooks and library books must be returned to the school before a Transfer Form will be completed. It will be necessary for the parent to pick up the student’s immunization forms. Upon request from the new school, we will forward your child’s records.

Tornado Drills will be held monthly. Students will be taught the proper procedures for this drill. The bell will ring 30-40 seconds for a tornado drill. In the event there is a tornado warning, students will be sent to the proper area until an “all-clear” is sounded.
