PE Semester Study Guide 2017

Procedures:

All students should be in their assigned positions before the end of the allotted dressing period (five minutes after the tardy bell)

Students will have 5 minutes at the beginning and the end of the class to change into gym attire.

Students should be seated in their assigned spot, facing the stage, with mouths closed, so that learning may occur.

If you miss a class due to illness or a medical release, you are responsible for turning in a 3-paragraph paper reviewing a sport or fitness related article per day of absence from class.

The use of the restroom or getting a drink is at the discretion of the teacher, not the student

In the event of a class interruption (announcement, drill) students should remain quiet, listen to the teacher for directions, and then quietly return to the scheduled activity.

Flickerball:

The game of Flickerball starts with a kickoff or throw off from the end zone.

The offensive team tries to move the ball down the court or field with a series of throws (short passes work!)

When a player catches the ball, he/she must plant one foot and not move until the ball is thrown to another player.

If the ball is dropped by the offense, or knocked out of the air by the defense, a turnover occurs and the defensive team takes possession of the ball. This is also called “reverse”.

The defensive team must stay at least 3 feet from the person with the ball

Only one person may defend against the person with the ball.

The person with the ball has 5 seconds to pass the ball to a teammate.

If the person with the ball does not pass the ball within 5 seconds, a turnover is called and the defense gets the ball.

Each “touchdown” in Flckerball is worth 1 point.

After a touchdown is scored, the scoring team stays at the end zone they scored in and the other team goes to the opposite end zone.

The type of defense played in Flickerball is called man to man.

Pin Soccer

Pin soccer starts with a throw in at the center of the court.

The basic rules of soccer apply.

Players may play the ball only with their feet. If they touch the ball with their hands, the other team gets the ball.

The goal of pin soccer is to knock all of your pins over.

Each pin is worth one point.

When all pins have been knocked over or time runs out, the next group of players takes the court.

Fitness

We use Fitgram testing to assess various fitness levels.

The pacer test is used to measure cardiovascular endurance (how fit your heart and lungs are)

The curl up and sit up tests measure muscle endurance (how long a muscle can repeat a motion)

Intensity is how hard a person is working out.

It is important to participate in fitness activities to improve your quality of life, improve overall fitness levels, and reduce body fat.

Curl-ups work the core (abdominal muscles)

Push-ups target the chest and shoulder muscles.

Changing quickly from a lying down position to standing position activity increases the heart rate and increases the intensity of the workout.

Core muscles include the shoulders, abdominals, and hips.

Proper form should be used to reduce the chance of injury while exercising, especially injury to the spine.

Some benefits of good physical health include: Lower stress levels, good joint function and flexibility, and prevention of certain diseases.

Staying hydrated helps to keep your cells in good working order, your brain functioning well, and helps to replace fluids lost during exercise

Volleyball

The game of volleyball starts with a serve.

Most games are played to 25 in a rally score format. Rally score means that either team may score on a possession.

If the ball lands on the boundary line, it is considered good and in play.

The ball may hit the net on the serve but must travel into the opponent’s court to remain in play.

No player may touch the net during play.

Once the serve occurs, players may move outside the court to play the ball (they cannot move into the opponents court to play the ball)

The ideal sequence of play is: pass (bump), set, hit (spike) but, the ball may be hit as few as one time but not more than three times per side.

When serving, you should keep your eye on the ball until after it leaves your hand.

A player may not hit the ball two times in a row, but may hit it again after another player has made contact with it.

Basketball

The game of basketball begins with a jump ball in the center of the court.

A bounce pass, chest pass, and overhead pass are all ways to move the ball from one player to another.

A double dribble occurs when a player uses two hands simultaneously to dribble the ball or when the player dribbles, stops and holds the ball, and then begins dribbling again.

A field goal is worth 2 points, a free throw is worth 1 point, and a field goal taken and made behind the three-point line is worth 3 points.

Over and back is called when a player takes the ball from the back-court ( you have 10 seconds to do this) into the front court and then back to the back-court.

If you dribble the ball on the boundary lines of the court, you are considered out of bounds.

Traveling is taking too many steps with the ball while dribbling.

There are 5 people per team on the court at one time.

Blocking is stopping the progress of a person with or without a ball.

Dribbling is controlling the ball with either hand.

Speedball

The kick-off must travel the length of the ball and may be lifted by the foot to a teammate.

Following a score, the team that did not sore kicks off.

A ball that is kicked into the air is referred to as a fly ball or aerial ball.

A player catching a fly ball is allowed one step in making a pass if the player is standing still, or 2 steps if the player caught the ball while running.

A ground ball is a ball that is in contact with the ground. It remains a ground ball until it is lifted into the air with a direct kick.

A ground ball may be kicked, headed, or played by any part of the body except the hands and arms.

Only one air dribble is allowed per possession.

Players should spread out over the playing field.

Trapping is the act of stopping the balls forward movement with the foot, leg, or chest.

Speedball is a combination of basketball, soccer, and touch football.

The object of the game is for the team with possession of the ball to advance the ball toward their goal line.

There are three ways to score in speedball. A basket (3 points), a field goal (2 points into the soccer net), and a touchdown (one point, thrown over the end line).

Softball

A softball team consists of 9 players on the field.

A batter is allotted 3 strikes before being called out, and 4 balls before advancing safely to first base.

Players may be declared out when:

-A ball is caught in the air

-The runner goes outside the baseline to advance to the next base

-A runner is tagged out

-When forced to advance, the runner does not get to the base before the ball gets to the baseman

A foul tip is considered a strike except for the third strike. A total of four fouls could occur before the player is considered out.

On a force out, the fielder (in possession of the ball) needs only touch the base for the runner to be out.

On a non-force out, the fielder must tag the runner with the ball.

A runner may not pass the runner in front of him to advance to the next base. Doing so results in the passing runner being called out.

On outs 1 & 2, if a fly ball is hit, players should wait to see if the ball is caught or dropped before advancing. If the ball is dropped, they may advance without tagging up. If the ball is caught, they must tag up before advancing.
