OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

The Workshop Mechanic will conduct mechanical maintenance on Council’s Plant Assets, focusing on providing quality works, safety and a high level of plant availability, under direction from the Workshop Supervisor. This position aims to assist in planning works programs by providing information on plant availability.

ORGANISATION ENVIRONMENT

McKinlay Shire Council is the southern gateway to the Gulf. The Shire spans some 41,000 square kilometres and townships include Julia Creek, Nelia, McKinlay and Kynuna.

McKinlay Shire has a population of approximately 1000 residents. Its main industries are beef cattle grazing, tourism and mining ventures at Cannington and Eloise Mine.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The challenge for the Workshop Mechanic is to assist the Workshop Supervisor to deliver proactive/preventative and reactive maintenance to ensure the quality of Council’s plant and equipment remains at an acceptable standard.

·  Maintain Council’s heavy and light vehicle fleet;

·  Ensure the accountability of all workshop tools, plant and equipment. Ensure all workshop tools, plant and equipment, are maintained in a serviceable condition to ensure these assets are safeguarded;

·  Maintain all Council’s plant assets in working order in accordance with warranty and service schedules;

·  Workshop environment and practices are carried out in accordance with Council’s requirements under the relevant Work Place Health and Safety policies and practices;

·  Responsible for field service of all Council plant when requested and required;

·  Operate Council plant and equipment within current qualifications as directed by Works Manager;

·  Punctuality at work with start and finish times as well as when given directions by the workshop manager

·  In the event of an emergency and the workshop manager being unavailable for direction, complete task and make safe.

·  Adhere to all directions given by supervisors and management.

·  Communicate with all stakeholders involved in Council operations in a professional and considerate manner.

·  Not to blemish, tarnish or deface Council in anyway, with the understanding that any of this can result in disciplinary action including termination of your employment.

·  Complete council Workshop job sheet for the repair/service of council plant and vehicle file record and reporting details.

·  Assist workshop supervisor in supervision/training of council diesel fitter trainee/apprentice.

·  Other duties as directed by Workshop Supervisor.

·  Contribute ideas and suggestions that promote safety awareness;

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

·  Completion of all duties in a timely and efficient manner;

·  Prompt reporting of any difficulties encountered requiring remedial actions to the Workshop Manager;

·  Compliance with all Policies and Procedures applying to the duties of the position;

·  Compliance with all workplace health and safety standards;

·  Compliance with the adopted Code of Conduct;

·  Punctuality and courtesy at all times;

·  Appropriate notifications to Workshop Supervisor with respect to work absences and leave requirements.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY

Management Responsibilities: Nil


Statutory Responsibilities: To act within the established procedures, processes and guidelines with scope to apply discretion to individual situations.

SELECTION CRITERIA

SC1  Skills/Requirements:

·  Demonstrated time and cost management skills;

·  Advanced level of technical skills;

·  Basic level of personal administration; keeping diary/records;

·  Competent level of communication and customer service skills;

SC2  Qualifications or Relevant Experience:

·  Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade

·  Previous experience in a Workshop;

·  Current Queensland ‘HC’ class driver’s license desirable;

·  Plant Operating Certificates desirable

·  Computer literacy and administration experience are desirable.

SC3  Knowledge:

·  A Knowledge of all mechanical engineering trades;

·  Demonstrated knowledge in maintenance of machinery and mechanical assets;

·  Knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety Act and Machinery Act.
