G.O.A.L.S. for the Ohio State University
Global Awareness
Although my experiences have been limited with diversity because of where I grew up, I hope to change that with the opportunities provided to me by Ohio State. I hope to get the opportunity to study abroad and learn about cultures different from those I have been exposed to. The chance to go to Europe and learn the histories of the many countries there has been something I’ve been interested in for awhile and I believe that I can have that opportunity here.
Also, through Mount Scholars, I hope to be part of the trip to North Carolina where we will be working with the school system there. There is currently turmoil in that area because a mostly white school is getting more funding than a mostly black school. If I could be part of this trip, I would be able to work with the students and get involved in easing the tension in the area.
Original Inquiry
I have had exposure to research through labs I have been involved in through my classes here at Ohio State, but over the summer I plan to broaden the experience I already have accumulated. I will be part of a research team in Cleveland Clinic’s Plastics lab. Here I will be able to conduct research in an environment I plan to be working in in the future as a career.
Academic Enrichment
My curriculum throughout high school and college proves to be academically challenging and enriching. My senior year alone all of the core classes I took were AP classes, and I took all of the honors classes available to me as well. Currently, even though I am in Scholars, I have continued to take honors classes, including FEH. I have honors classes scheduled for next semester as well and will continue to be involved in these classes when possible. I have always pushed myself academically because I love to learn and gain knowledge, especially about math and the sciences.
Leadership Development
It is extremely important to develop leadership skills in today’s world, and especially in my chosen college of Engineering. We often have to work in groups to solve problems given to us, and to have the ability to understand everyone’s skill sets allows for a better assignment of roles. In high school, I was a leader academically and in my extracurricular activities. I was varsity captain for both my soccer and track teams my senior year. I was also the National Honors Society Treasurer for my class. Now, as a member of the Mount Leadership Society, I have been able to further develop the skills I gained during high school and gain a better understanding of how best I lead, which ways I tend to approach things, and other types of leaders I work best with.
Service Engagement
As a high school student I dedicated a lot of my free time to servicing others. I continually tutored middle school students during my lunch periods throughout my senior year. These students were struggling in math which was affecting their standardized tests scores. I was able to help teach them at a pace which was better for their learning styles and give them the individual attention teachers aren’t always able to provide. I also spent free periods during the day to collect my schools recycling with the goal of making my school a greener and more earth friendly place. On Sundays, I volunteered as an office aid at my church as well.
Here, I have many opportunities to provide my love of helping others through Mount. They have a variety of monthly service projects in which I can get involved, with a multitude of topics so I can sign up for projects which I feel passionate about and connected to. There is also Legacy Week, where different teams of students create their own service projects based on a general topic of choice. I am a member of Team Environment, and I am thrilled to continue the work I was involved in in high school here at Ohio State and in the Columbus community. I hope to continue to be part of these projects next year and continue to be involved when I can be as a post Mount as well.
