INTRO / 5 minutes / Introduce the idea of measurement by showing a short video from Yourtube about measurement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjNsvSHYK98
Then explain that the students will have to pick one type of measurement that they will have to remember the name of after the movie is over and write it on the board / Watch the movie provided and remember one unit of measurement that they can repeat after the movie is over

LESSON SEQUENCE / 2 minutes / Split classroom into small groups of three to five students. / Get into their groups and sit quietly waiting for the next direction.
1 minute / Pass our hand outs and rulers / Sit quietly while receiving materials
5 minutes / Will explain the different measurements on the ruler. (1 foot, 1 inch, ½, ¼, 1/8th and 1/16th) / Will follow along on their “Ruler Handout” and mark each line down with the correct unit of measurement.
5 minutes / Give and explain the hand out for the children to go around and measure with their ruler and record. These objects can be anything they want but they must list what it is and the length of it. (What Can I Measure?) / Students will sign their names on the paper and listen to instructions.
5 minutes / Explain the rules and pre-corrections to the activity then instruct the students to go. / Find ten objects of any size in the room; record what they are, and how long they are on their handout.
1 minute / Instruct students to get into their guided math groups. / Get into their guided math groups of 3 to five students.
5 minutes / Instruct students to go over what object they found and the lengths they recorded in order to compare them to each other. / Compare objects and the lengths that they measured them to be.
2 minutes / Have a whole group discussion as to what everyone found and for the objects that they found, did the children have the same lengths for them. / Engage in whole group discussion.

CLOSING / 10 minutes / Hand out measuring assessment and then instruct the students to take the assessment. Anything they have to measure with a ruler must be accurate to the quarter inch. Then, let the students know that when they have completed the assessment, they are able to silently read a book or catch up on homework. / Take assessment, then read a book, or do their homework.
Students must bring in one object other than a ruler that they are able to measure things with. This can be ANYTHING other than a ruler. They will need it for tomorrow’s activity in class.
