STUDENT MATERIALS LIST
This workshop will be a combination of outdoor painting and studio painting. Please
dress appropriately for painting outdoors.
You may paint in oils or pastels. You may use acrylics or water soluble oils if you like,
but I will be primarily talking about oils and pastels.
“Must Have Materials”—-
A good, sturdy easel that is easy to transport outdoors. Table top easels will not work
outdoors.
A sketchbook—at least 5x7 or larger, pencil or black sharpie to draw with. I will provide
view finders for everyone.
IF YOU ARE PAINTING IN OILS:
Bring any color you like to paint with in addition to these recommended colors:
Cadmium Lemon
Cad Yellow
Cad Orange
Cad Red Light
Permanent Rose
Alizarin Crimson
Cobalt Blue
Permanent Green Light
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue
Violet
Titanium White
Brushes: I use flats and brights and filberts. Bring what you like or have in a variety of
sizes.
Panels: You may paint on panels or stretched canvas. Bring 9x12 or 11x14 for the plein
air paintings. Bring a larger panel or canvas for the studio paintings, up to 16x20.
Paper towels—I use Viva.
An odorless turpentine or mineral spirits and a container for it. The best one is
GAMSOL MINERAL SPIRITS—it is completely odorless and non-carcinogenic.
IF YOU ARE PAINTING IN PASTELS:
Bring whatever colors you like to paint with. Try to bring a good variety, hard to soft,
warm to cool colors.
Paper and board—whatever surface you like to use and a board to mount it to. 9x12 or
11x14 paper, larger paper for the studio paintings.
I use a half inch piece of foam core large enough to attach my paper to, and wrap it in
flannel. The soft surface seems to work well with pastels.
Any other supplies that you use to paint in pastels with.
