COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students will learn the basic skills needed to gain employment as a maintenance and light repair technician and will expose student to automotive preventative maintenance and servicing, replacing brakes, as well as steering and suspension components. Students will learn about general electrical system diagnosis, electrical theory, basic tests that are required, and determine the necessary action. In addition, students will learn how to evacuate and recharge air-conditioning systems using the proper refrigerant. The standards in this course are aligned with ASE/NATEF standards and are an excellent foundation for the entry-level technician. The prerequisite for this course is Maintenance and Light Repair 2.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

StudentsMUST have fully enclosed shoes as stated in dress code. Safety toe shoes/boots are recommended, but not required. Students may bring coveralls or work aprons to protect school clothes. We do not have any place for students to change clothes. We do work with oil and grease, and ALL students are required to do shop service work and cleaning.

Students must have a pen or pencil and a notebook (binder or folder) for this class. We will set the note book up in class and students should have the notebook in class each day. Notebooks should be kept all year to study for the LEOCT test in May 2017 which will count 20% of your YEARLY grade.

We provide safety glasses and they must be worn at all times in the lab. If the student does not feel comfortable in the glasses we provide he/she must provide their own. Tinted glasses are not permitted. Only a clear or amber lens will be allowed and they must meet ANSI regulations.

CLASSROOM RULES

BESafe – Safety is our top priority! Due to the type of work we do and the equipment we use safety is a discipline matter. All students MUST follow our safety guidelines.

BEResponsible – We are a professional career trade! Do what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, the way you are supposed to do it! Use your time wisely and keep a positive attitude.

BERespectful –Everyone likes to be treated well. Most people forget that to be treated well we have to treat others well! Disrespect is not only a discipline matter, but can evolve into reasons employers won’t hire technicians or even terminate them. We ALL are on the same team!

DAILY PROCEDURES

Daily bell work – Students will have essential questions to answer or instructions will be onscreen each day.

Restrooms – Use the restroom before classes is our rule and we have been instructed not to allow students to leave during class.

Work areas – keep all work areas clean at all times. Put all tools and equipment in designed place.

Learn – Each day student should note one new thing they learned or want to learn more about.

Class time is for Class work!! Stay up to date on your online modules!! You can never get back the time you waste!

Classroom and Shop Discipline Steps

Tardies – we mark students tardy for the first 10 minutes of class, after that the student is absent and written up for skipping!

Cell phones and other electronic devices - student will surrender the item and the item will be turned in to the office. Do not take cell phones outwithout permission!

Safety – this is a major offense – no warnings – can loose shop privileges/referral

3rd time – Discipline referral

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing any graded activity will face punishment as detailed in the student handbook.

MAKE-UP/RE-TEST PROCEDURE

Students will adhere to the ECCA make-up work and late work procedure (3 days). NO exceptions without prior teacher approval.

INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY METHODS

Lecture, demonstration, power point, audiovisual, online training modules, multimedia video clips, and hands on practice will be used to teach objectivesin this course.

CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

Cell phones and other electronic devices are not permitted in the automotive lab or classroom. We have computer labs for your electronic needs in class. This is your warning and the first violation will be dealt with according to school policy. If it is seen, heard or you appear to be concealing the device, the instructor reserves the right to confiscate it and follow school policy regarding electronic devices. If you have ear phones the instructor reserves the right to confiscate the ear phones as well as any electronic device found in possession of the student per ECSD policy.

I sincerely hope this conveys my feelings toward cell phones in class – do not have them out FOR ANY REASON without permission – this includes texts/calls to parents!! Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

I trust you have read the syllabus and understand that this is a brief description of the program you have chosen. There are several rules and guidelines laid out in this document that we expect you to acknowledge and follow. These are by no means the only rules and guidelines that are going to be given to you since we are a working shop. We will cover safety rules and other class rules that are deemed important as needed.

If the rules of the shop are not followed and you are a safety threat you will be assigned to the classroom and forfeit the performance based/hands-on lab work. This decision is at the discretion of the instructor.
