This upcoming March, as a second year medical student, I will be helping to coordinate a medical service trip to XXX. My trip will consist of fellow second-year medical students like me, pharmacy and dental students as well as physicians and faculty, depending upon the specific needs of the community’s underserved population.
Our team will partner with organization/university name to help provide us with lodging, food, translators and camaraderie while we staff their on-site clinic and daily travel to one of their urban or rural areas of outreach. In addition to staffing the clinics, we will bring or arrange the purchase of much needed medical supplies, medications and educational materials.
This experience will provide me with invaluable one-on-one real life clinical experience in addition to my regular classroom studies. I am afforded an opportunity to interact with patients -- especially those from another culture – and to acquire a more holistic perspective of different approaches to medical education and healthcare, while also giving back to the global community.
