Hatchmen / I have witnessed on many occasion the hatch man save the crew as well as stevedores from being hit and squashed by swinging loads due to unforeseen snags. thehatchman also saves time and money for the company as they stop the crane driver from damaging cargo and equipment when the driver can't see the load or area around the load. If we did not have a hatchman then i would not feel safe going on a ship to do my job and would seriously consider leaving the industry i have 2 daughters and a wife to take care of.
Stevedoring qualifications / Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications (Cert II, Cert III and Cert IV in Stevedoring) that have been developed for the stevedoring industry?
It is fundamental that all workers are trained up and hold qualifications in this dangerous industry..
Safety Induction skill-set / Should the newly developed stevedoring ‘safety skill-set’ be used to underpin safety inductions?
There is not enough training in inductions we see new contractors and employees having near misses all the time because they don't understand the industry and have not been trained in all the hazards.
Use of checklists / Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material?
It is easy to forget or overlook things that might be vitaland checklist is a way to be reminded and accountable.
