You join us in the 85th minute of the FA Cup third round tie between AFC Little Chipping-on-the-Wold Rovers and Chelsea. Chelsea, Premiership champions, European favourites are assembled at a cost of many millions of pounds – players earning tens of thousands of pounds a week. Little Chipping are a bunch of part-timers who earn their living delivering mail, cleaning windows and settling insurance claims, amongst other things. Of course, Chelsea didn’t join the FA Cup until this round, the third round proper, so this is their first FA Cup tie. Little Chipping have played a preliminary round, four qualifying rounds, one of which needed a replay, and of course the first and second round matches against Tranmere Rovers and Torquay United, both of which went to replays, extra time and penalties. And now their defence has held firm for most of this match. After some pre-match taunting about how Chelsea were going to break the FA Cup scoring record, could the biggest crowd this small club has ever seen be about to have the thrill, and the financial reward, of a replay? They have five minutes to hold out. Dave Little, their goalkeeper, at only five-foot-six the smallest keeper in this year’s competition, has stopped everything coming his way with a sensational performance. And what’s this? Chelsea’s attack has broken down on the edge of the Little Chipping area and striker Kenny Saul has broken away. He’s fast. All the Chelsea players are the wrong end of the pitch. He’s through. They won’t catch him. He takes the ball on. He rounds the goalkeeper who brings him down. Penalty! And look who is going to take it. It’s Dave Little. He’s scored in previous penalty shootouts. He seems nerveless. He removes his goalie gloves and cap. He calmly steps up. He normally blasts them. The referee whistles and Little hits it straight down the middle. Petr Cech, lucky to still be on the pitch, dives out of the way. It’s there! It would have hit Cech right between the eyes if he’d stayed still. Little Chipping have scored and there won’t be time to kick off again. Chelsea are out! What a giant-killing!
