Dear Student:

Your homeroom teacher has been given a list containing your new network and email account information. This information will be necessary for you to use any computer in your school. The following information is important for you to know.

Network Account

·  You MUST log on to the network to use any computer in your school.

·  Any use of your account will be monitored and recorded.

·  Keep your password a secret and change it frequently. You are responsible for any action on your account. If you share your password, you are not only putting your network privileges at risk but could face disciplinary action if someone misuses your account.

·  Passwords must be 8 characters long and must include upper and/or lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

·  Passwords are case-sensitive meaning that "password" does not equal "PASSWORD".

·  You can change your password at: http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/scripts/pass.plx

·  If you forget your password, ask your homeroom teacher to get it changed for you.

·  Any documents you create will have to be saved to a 3.5" floppy disk. Your teachers will let you know if they will provide one or if you should bring one from home. (You could also email files to yourself at home if you have home Internet access.)

·  Logging in requires 3 pieces of information: username, password, and domain. If any of these are wrong, you will not be allowed access to the computer system.

·  When you log in to a computer, you should answer NO to the 'remember settings prompt' and you should CLEAR the 'windows password' confirm boxes and click OK.

·  The domain that you belong to is school dependent. You can find out the domain that your school is a member of from a teacher.

Internet and Email Access

·  Internet access and email will be available only to students who have returned the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) signed by their parents.

·  Your Internet access and Email will be filtered. If you attempt to access 'forbidden' sites or send inappropriate email, your account will be disabled.

·  You may check email from any computer with Internet access (including home). Email can be accessed at: http://schools.calhoun.k12.al.us:8003

·  Mailbox size is limited. Please delete old email from your inbox, sent items, and trash frequently.

·  Computer viruses are frequently spread by attachments to email. Please do not open any email attachment unless you are sure it is safe.

·  While at school, you will not have access to any email accounts except for your school account. You also will not be allowed to enter chat rooms or to download instant messenger type programs.

We hope that you can use your new accounts to enhance your learning experience and expand your horizons. When you are reviewing these rules, please remember that the sole purpose for computer, Internet, and email access at school is for educational value. They are not provided for you to play games, download music, or chat with friends. If you would like more information about the Calhoun County Schools network or technology plan, you can look at the Network Basics and other documents on our web site (http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/technology.html).

Sincerely,

Rita Wright
