Please select and describe how this project will address one of the following.
1) Significantly increase student success in gatekeeper courses
OR
2) Enhance the academic quality of gatekeeper courses and supplementary resources
This project proposes to increase student success, enhance the academic quality of my gatekeeper courses, and serve as a supplementary resource. This project will consist of creating two math modules, post all created modules from January to August on an internet site, and develop an online MAT151 College Algebra course.
Two math models will be created. The first math module will be a package of information from the MAT151 College Algebra course that focuses on the topic of Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. This math module will convey information on: exponential functions, logarithmic functions, properties of logarithms, solving exponential and logarithmic equations, and exponential & logarithmic models.
The second math module will be a package of information from the MAT151 College Algebra course that focuses on the topic of Systems of Equations and Inequalities. This math module will convey information on: solving systems using substitution, solving systems using elimination, linear systems in three or more variables, and systems of inequalities.
These modules will created with the use of technology. Possible types of technologies being considered are the use of video and audio, screen and lecture capture tools (such as Camtasia and Jing), and the use of Soft chalk Lesson Builder.
Once these modules have been completed, they along with other previously completed modules will be posted on an internet site where students can have access to them.
The final step is to set up an online MAT151 College Algebra course that includes all the modules created and that may eventually be used to teach MAT151 online in upcoming semesters.
It is also important to note that all the material created will also be available for my face-to-face courses. Having this material available for face-to-face students would increase the quality of my MAT151 course and would positively impact student success. If a student is absent, failed to understand the material presented, any student will be able to review the notes and examples anywhere, anytime.
Project Description
The purpose of this project is to create two math modules, post all created modules from January to August on an internet site, and develop an online MAT151 College Algebra course. These modules will be created with the use of technology.
Major Goals (What are the major goals of this project?)
Examples: Create 2 modules incorporating wikis and audio; Create a module that will improve students scores in the ___ concept.
1. Incorporate technologies on the previously mentioned topics of Exponential Functions, Logarithmic Functions, and Systems of Equations and Inequalities.
2. Create two modules that will enhance student understanding of college algebra concepts in Exponential Functions, Logarithmic Functions, and Systems of Equations and Ienqualities by incorporating technologies such as video, audio, and lecture capture tools.
3. Post all created modules on an interenet site.
4. Set up an online MAT151 College Algebra course with this material.
Assessment (How will you assess the project’s effectiveness and what supporting data will you use?)
The assessment will be done by comparing student overall course grades between two MAT151 courses; a face-to-face class from a previous semester who did not use the modules and a face-to-face class who did use the module.
In addition I plan to ask, through a survey, if the modules were considered useful.
If an online MAT151 course is taught by this faculty, there will also be a comparison of overall course grades between a previous face-to face course who did not see the modules, a face-to-face course that did have modules available, and the online course.
