To what extent does Gatsby’s wealth, and all the luxuries that it provides, affect his ability to achieve what he desires? How do other characters’ attitudes toward wealth affect what happens throughout the narrative?

Assessment Summary
At the beginning of the unit, students will use lists, journals and quickwrites (brainstorm) to tap into their prior knowledge of the 1920’s and the history of the Amercian Dream. Class discussions will provide opportunities for thought-provoking ideas before reading the text. While reading, the students wil continue marking text, discussion ideas related to the American Dream and the purpose of the text. Writing informally and formally about the issues surrounding the American Dream will encourage critical thinking skills throughout the unit. In the end, students will synthesize the ideas presented and discussed throughout the unit in a final power point.

Prerequisite Skills
Students need to be able to read and have analyzed another text prior to the beginning of the reading. Students also need to have some knowledge of the historical context.
