Purpose of visit:
In order to fairly represent the demographic of the city there is a need to visit residential homes in as many areas as possible. There is also a need to observe premises which have consistently passed CQC inspections to observe best practice.
To speak to the residents of the residential home to ascertain the frequency, range and standard of recreational activities on offer to residents.
We will also be seeking resident’s opinions regarding local community and visitor involvement in recreational programmes.
Subsequent to any visit a report is prepared, factual detail agreed by the manager of the facility visited, and then shared with the HWKuH Board before distribution.
The visit was pre-arranged. We used a prepared list of questions to find out relevant facts, observed all aspects of the premises or specific areas and spoke to staff, residents and visitors as relevant.

Findings:
During our visit we were unable to speak to the majority of residents due to them either being asleep or in their rooms. We spoke at length to one resident regarding recreation and the community, the resident was aware of all the activities at Ivanhoe and had joined in with most activities and trips including trips to the farm and the sea-side. The resident talked about youngsters coming in to sing and also whether or not he wanted to go on the upcoming trip to Hull Fair.
We spoke at length to Nita Banks (manager) and Claire Renton (activities co-ordinator) about the activities provided for the residents. Activities are planned on a weekly basis but are put on the information board daily. The information board includes the day, date and month, the weather, meals menu and any activities taking place that day. This board is in the corridor where is it easily seen by residents, visitors and staff. The activities can be split into 2 categories, routine & non-routine. Routine activities include baking, housework club, gardening, movie afternoons and games (indoor or outdoor dependant on weather). Routine activities are mainly those that take place within the home.
Non-routine activities include trips out and seasonal activities in the home as well as singers and schools coming in to visit.
There are a number of photographs on the walls of previous events including an Easter bonnet parade and trip to Honeysuckle farm. During the summer the home held a summer fair in the garden for residents, friends, relatives and the local community. Upcoming events include a 40’s nostalgia afternoon at a local hotel and a trip to Hull Fair. For those who do not want to go to the fair there will be a ‘hull fair afternoon’ in the home with snacks and games brought back from the fair.
For each activity session or trip a record sheet is completed giving the names of the residents who took part and filed in an activities folder along with any photographs taken during the activity.
Family members are encouraged to come to all activities both in the home and any trips or visits.
Conclusions:
Ivanhoe run a varied programme of activities for residents and visitors and all activities are recorded in line with Denestar processes.
Ivanhoe make use of local links including community transport providers.
As we were unable to speak to more than one resident regarding recreation and the community during our visit we have been unable to accurately reflect resident opinion within our report.
Recommendations:
Further to our visit we would recommend the following:
  • Healthwatch Enter & View Ambassadors to carry out a further visit during a scheduled activity in order to gather resident opinion
