From the Desk of the Principal…
We have had a great start to the 2016-17 school year at Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School. Family Fun Night, the cookie dough fundraiser, and pep rally were all big hits. Most importantly, students and teachers have worked hard in the classroom. Please come see the results of this hard work during our parent conferences that will be held at CRMS from 3:30-6:00 on October 27TH. Parent conferences are a great time to have one-on-one conversations with your student’s teachers about his/her progress in class. Our teachers are always willing to help our students and parents. Together we can discover ways to increase student achievement. Thank you for supporting the students of CRMS!

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 24 – 28. This is an annual event focusing on drug prevention and education for our children. Students, teachers, and staff will have the opportunity to participate in different themes to promote anti-drug awareness. Let’s use this as an opportunity to encourage students to make healthy life choices.
Many of our seventh graders have been invited to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s 7th Grade Talent Search. These students have demonstrated their strong intellectual abilities by achieving at the 95th percentile or higher on the SC Ready or SC PASS. They now have the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT at a future date.
CRMS also has a large number of eighth graders qualifying to take the PSAT on October 19th based on their SC Ready or SC PASS scores. We hope that many of those students will achieve a qualifying score and be recognized as South Carolina Junior Scholars.

TEACHER FEATURE
The SGA asks students to nominate teachers each month who they feel are deserving of being the Teacher Feature. This month our Teacher Feature is Coach Nick Jolly. Many students said they enjoyed his PE class. They also noted that he was funny, talented, and knows how to make kids smile. Coach Jolly has been teaching PE and Health at CRMS for 6 years. He also coaches JV and Varsity Football and Basketball at Chesterfield High. He has been married to his wife, Jessica, for 6 years, and they have a two year old daughter, Claire. Coach Jolly said he is trulyappreciative to be named the Teacher Feature and loves being at Chesterfield-Ruby Middle.
Matthews’ Medical Minute : Health Screenings
All parents want their children to be successful in school. This can be a challenge if their children cannot see or hear properly or they are constantly troubled with dental or back pain. Throughout the year, our school nurse performs various screenings to detect any problems that may interfere with a student’s inability to learn. For example, the 6th and 8th graders are screened to detect problems with blood pressure, scoliosis, vision and MBI’s. 7th graders are screened to detect dental and hearing problems. Parents are notified when their child fails a screening and recommendations for follow up are discussed.
If you are concerned that your child might have a medical condition that negatively impacts his/her ability to learn, please feel free to contact our school nurse. Mrs. Matthews will work to ensure any medical problems are addressed so your child can be successful at CRMS.
The Cookie Dough Fundraiser Mega-Party is rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18th!
