The Hunger Games are coming!

Thanks to Donors Choose, the LPHS Book Club received 20 copies of the entire Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. If you haven’t heard of this dystopian thriller yet—stop reading—and go get yourself a copy!

In celebration of The Hunger Games movie premier in March, the library will be hosting two events. The first event will take place on Monday, March 26th. The students will be forming “Districts” (teams) and competing in Hunger Games Trivia. On Tuesday, March 27th we will be meeting in the library and walking to Webster Place Movie Theater to see the movie after school. Chaperones are required, so we would love teachers and parents to join in on the fun. Spread the word to your students and have them stop in and talk to Ms. Mangurten about forming a team or to get a movie permission slip.

MS Word Bibliographic Tools

Microsoft Word has a collection of bibliographic tools that often get overlooked when students create their research projects and papers. These tools offer the ability to insert citations in a variety of formats, generate a bibliography in multiple formats, insert endnotes and footnotes, and allow users to manage these sources with previews and sorting options. Visit Microsoft at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/create-a-bibliography-HA010067492.aspx for more info.

Collaboration

Storytelling

Prior to Winter Break, Sara Khan’s class spent a week in the library learning about the art of storytelling. The classes came into the library and heard Ms. Mangurten tell two stories: A Jack tale and a Jewish Folk Tale. The students spent time with storytelling exercises, getting comfortable speaking in front of their peers, and using memorization techniques. The students were responsible for finding their own folk tale and performing it later in the week. It was very exciting to watch the final student performances! There are many natural story tellers in Ms. Khan’s class. View Ms. Mangurten tell two stories on our website at http://www.lphslibrary.org/resources.html.

Prezi

In February, Judy Peiros’ students spent a week in the library designing digital posters based on the themes of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The students were able to animate their posters and put their own interpretations on the varying themes. Ms. Peiros and Ms. Mangurten were very pleased with the students’ final product. Prezi is a free online technology that allows users to animate their slide shows by zooming around the Prezi canvas to visualize their ideas. You can import almost any type of file into your Prezi project! This technology is perfect for going beyond that run-of-the-mill PowerPoint presentation. Explore Prezi here: http://prezi.com/.

Weblinks

Ms. Mangurten and Jeff Bakke recently worked together to create a links page of credible websites for his students while they begin their research on The French Revolution and The Industrial Revolution. Check it out and see if you would like something similar for your students. Please visit http://www.lphslibrary.org/french-revolution.html.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Ms. Glunz’s students and Mr. Herranz are currently creating interactive maps for the William Shakespeare story Othello using ESRI’s GIS software ArcGIS Explorer. Events of the story are marked on the map using the software, and students are able to make connections with events in the story and a real historical world map from Shakespeare’s time. Students will also be able to compare and contrast locations from the story with our current location in Chicago and the United States. Explore the free ArcGIS Explorer software here in the LPHS Library or at http://www.arcgis.com/home/ or http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/explorer/index.html.

Technology for Check-out to Teachers

The Mimio Pad The Ipevo USB Document Camera The Epson LCD H310 Projector

The Library has a number of current technology items for check-out to LPHS staff. The latest acquisition through a grant award is a combination document camera/tablet/LCD projector set that is designed to be used with a laptop in a classroom. This equipment allows you to project an image from a book or an object, as well as project an image from your laptop. Other items available also include “flip” style video cameras, a digital still camera, and a new DVD player.

Curriculum Support

The Library staff is happy to order books for YOU as well as for students. We ask that teachers let us know what topics are being taught and researched so we can purchase materials to support your curriculum. It typically takes 4 weeks for books to arrive so please let us know of anything we can get for April and May or the beginning of next school year. We just ordered several popular young adult titles in Spanish for Carolin Colon, books for Jeff Jaglois’ students’ upcoming debates, and titles on the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution for Jeff Bakke. Stop by and let us know how we can help you.

What are you reading?

You may have noticed signs around the building detailing what other teachers are reading. The library is promoting reading among the students and staff by demonstrating what the staff is reading. Stop by the Library or email Mr. Herranz if you would like a sign for your classroom. Some samples:
